Bmi

  • I know that BMI is a stupid thing but it does show some progress. Especially for those at very high weights. When I started my journey in August of this year my BMI was at 49.33. Really?! Nearly half my body weight was fat (probably not but close)! Today I figured my BMI and it is: 43.22... While i am still morbidly obese, what a huge difference! I am so proud of myself! I am almost out of the "Extreme Obesity" section of the chart!
  • Super yay!!!
I too track bmi, even while I don't agree with it.
  • Congrats therecoveringfatchic - you are doing great. Funny I've been thinking about BMI today - I have less than 3 lbs until I'm obese. (Those "I'm Obese!" subject lines have always made me smile.) I can't wait to lose the "morbidly" part
  • Yeah!! You should be proud of yourself because you are doing a great job.
  • Congrats!

I totally agree that BMI means a lot more when one is really overweight than when one is closer to "normal weight." I track my weight on a spreadsheet and it automatically calculates my BMI. But I really don't care about the number, I mostly care about what weight class I'm in, what the next one down is, and how long it will take to get there!

I actually find the weight classes so helpful, because they offer a string of attainable mini goals. I had to lose about 30 pounds to get out of obese class II, 30 more pounds until I am out of obese all together, 30 more pounds to normal, and then another 25 pounds to my goal (if it even stays my goal). Losing 115 pounds is hard, losing around 30 pounds four times in a row is ... still hard, but not as hard.

Wow! You'll be getting another dragonfly any day now! Such great progress!!!!
  • Thank you everyone! I am feeling so good! I just got back from day 2 week 1 of the c25k program and I love it! I really think I can do this! I'm stoked!
  • I was surprised to find out that many people I view as "normal" are "overweight" if you go by BMI - even my weight loss coach!

I realized that long term, I will likely continue to straddle the border of normal and overweight by BMI and that's okay. So is maintaining at an overweight BMI, even obese if you are otherwise healthy

I did C25K! It was awesome. Then I ran four 5Ks, including the Color Run from my avatar. Enjoy!
