"Official" thread for the Pedometer Challenge
How many steps can you take in a day?
All you have to do to join in is get/borrow/steal a pedometer and start walkin' :) My goal for right now is to get 10,000 steps per day in. Lets see who can get the most steps in every day!! 1 lap of my work parking lot (from chair to chair again) = 1400 steps round trip to water cooler = 220 steps |
Health and fitness researchers are finding that people can achieve health benefits by exercising at a less intense level than previously thought. In other words, someone who is sedentary most of the day but who jogs over the lunch hour may expend as much cumulative energy as someone who is active the entire day.
Two recent studies published in the Journal of the American Medical Association have confirmed that this lifestyle approach can be as effective as a traditional exercise program. Many doctors and researchers have found that wearing a pedometer is a great way to track your daily activity — and inspire you to move more on days you have been sedentary. To achieve good health, strive to take 10,000 steps a day (the equivalent of walking roughly five miles). A person who walks 10,000 steps a day will burn between 2,000 and 3,500 extra Calories per week, which will result in achieving a vastly better health profile and longer lifespan. If your goal is to lose weight, start slow and gradually work yourself up to walking 12,000 to 15,000 steps a day. Walking is a great way to lose weight — and keep it off. Whether your goal is to achieve good health or to lose weight, put your pedometer on when you dress in the morning, and don't take it off until bedtime (unless, of course, you take a shower somewhere in between). Every step you take throughout your day counts! |
Small changes can add up to large increases in your daily activity level. Here are just a few ideas to get you started:
Park in the farthest space from the store or mall. Walk, run and play actively with your children or grandchildren. Mow your yard using a push mower. Take a walking break instead of a coffee break at work. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Hide your remote and change channels the old-fashioned way. Put on upbeat music while you clean your house. Take up dance — ballroom, clogging, you name it. Most of us love music, and it's fun! |
Beth Anne,
You've inspired me! I don't have a pedometer yet, but when I took my boys to the park this afternoon, instead of sitting on the bench and watching them play, I walked around the sidewalk that surrounds the play area. I just kept walking around and around it. I was sure that people were thinking, "What does that fat lady think she's doing?!!?", but I did it anyway. Thanks for the motivation and inspiration! |
I AM IN!
Base goal: 7,000-10,000 steps per day Above and beyond: 17,000+ Miss Chris At a measly 2,237 at the start of shift! |
i need to get one of those things. first i'd want to wear it and try to forget it - to see how i normally fare.
although today, i power walked 7 blocks to a hair salon to get my brows done, and all the way back. plus i walk to and from the bus stop. so maybe i'm doing good. =) |
Wooohooo after jogging through the house several times to get my numbers up :D

Go Kim Go!
I made just over 8000 steps yesterday. Today I have 4192 so far... Of course it figures that now that I'm motivated to walk, the forecast is RAIN for like the next week. Oh well, if I have to do laps in the building, so be it. |
Where would you get a pedometer??? and how much do they run???
|
I will be in by Monday! I will dig that thing out! I promise.
|
I got mine at Target and it was pretty darn cheap, like $13 I think I paid more for a stopwatch for lifting.
Last night at work I hit 8,693 steps. Pretty sad for a 16 hour shift, but 4 of those hours were spent in a meeting. Miss Chris |
Okay, I bought a pedometer today at Sports Authority for $9.99. I'm going to have to take it off while I'm driving, though, because it's somehow measuring "steps." I walked the 47 steps into and out of the games store to pick up son, then drove home. When I got out of the car at home, I had magically walked 390 steps. :?:

I'm sure I only got about 15,000 for the day though but I'll take it!!! |
Hey Jenelle - that's hysterical!! It must be registering the bumps in the car.
I got my pedometer from WW for about $20 - I know you can get em cheaper at the store. Yesterday I got in 9300 steps. Woo hoo! |
Yesterday I was only awake for 10 hours! I got 5,998 steps in thats almost 600 steps/hour!
I feel good about that! Miss Chris |
I got one for free from work here, so there are no excuses for me, I am in!!!

This is a great thread. Makes me wish I had a pedometer!
|
Yesterday was insanely crappy. Walking from my house to the theatre was about 4,500 steps. Then we went to dinner and boating so I just hit under 6,000. Today I will try to make it up!

I got in just over 8000 yesterday - today was INSANE so I did walk around insidea lot but my pedometer wouldn't stay on so I don't know how many steps.
Also, I figured out that even though I measured my steps, the pedometer isn't reading accurate as far as miles and steps go. I measured the other day and walking around the parking lot is 1400 steps - the pedometer says 800 (!) its also exactly 1/2 mile and the pedometer said 3/10s of a mile. I can't make it more sensitive... maybe the battery is dying. I'll continue investigating. :) |
I am going to have to check into a new meter. I thought I have sure been walking alot for so few steps. Well the humidity in NE is making the mechanism stick. Lovely huh!
Miss Chris |
I was a lazy butt yesterday and sportbrain agrees. At least i did mow the yard.

Got a new pedometer! This one is REALLY COOL! Not only do I have the step counter I have distance, calorie, and clock functions. It was a little more, $20 at Target. WOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOO!
Miss Chris |
:( Haven't dug it out yet! Sorry!!! :nono:
|
Ok!! Dug it out and set it up. Don't know how accurate it will be, but at least I'll learn what a good day for me is and it'll help me monitor!! :)
|
I suck! I sold mine on ebay a while back... didn't use it much
|
It's noon and I'm at 1779 steps. Sure doesn't seem like very much. I'm teaching even.
How is every one else been doing? |
I hit almost 9,000 steps yesterday, just over 4.0 miles, and burned 500 calories. I have been at work for 2 hours (10 left to go) and I have 1890 steps, 1 mil, and 109 cal. under my belt(I am so punny ;-)
Miss Chris |
9,000 steps again, and 4.7 miles and 510 calories!
Miss Chris |
Only did 3,200 steps yesterday. Don't know how accurate this thing is. Either I am not nearly as active as I thought or it's off.
|
Yesterday had over 14,000......forgot the darn thing at home this morning so I have a big ZERO today......lol
|
Did 3,700 steps today. But still doesn't seem right.
|
Sandi - I'm having problems with mine too which is why I haven't been posting - I've still been walking as MUCH as possible - but I've counted in my head the # of steps I've taken and the pedometer has been WAY below what I counted.
I'm waiting for birthday money to go buy a new one :) |
Even though the numbers seem low - it still gives me something to shoot for. So if it shows a good day as 4000, then I have a 2000 day, I know I need to get moving.
|
4,300 steps yesterday. very strange because it's my highest yet and I didn't teach.
