Injured Ankle... :(

  • Saturday my husband and I went hiking. It was a nice, pretty day and we went on a trail I've never been on before. A couple of miles into the hike I caught my foot on a tree root and went down, twisting my ankly in the process. Then, yesterday morning as I was walking out of my house to go to church I fell, tearing ligaments in the same ankle. So not fun!

Unfortunately this means my running is on hold for a while until I heal. So is my biking, walking, swimming, or any other activity requiring the use of my left ankle. This is so not fun.

    I hope I heal soon!
  • UGH, what a bummer!! What did your doctor say about the amount of time to heal?
  • Yuck! I would think swimming would still be an option, though. Lots of strokes you can do without your ankle. And for me, the mental benefits of exercise far outweigh the physical ones, so even if the calorie burn isn't that high, it is well worth it for me.

You were doing so well with your running goal, too! Sorry this happened to you!
  • I'm in a similar situation... but I did permenant damage to my ankle. I can walk as long as I don't overdo it except bad weather... when its rainy my ankle is really achy.

Anyway... I do squats and sit ups. And the new thing I'm trying that seems to be working is using ice packs on my back. Something so simple but it does burn calories.
  • You might ask your doc if there is any harm in doing some non-kicking swimming exercise - that'd be your best bet for keeping up your fitness level while you heal I would think. Sorry about the injury - that really stinks, but tighten the food side of the equation and I bet you'll continue to see good progress.
  • Oh no! I second the swimming suggestion, just take it easy. Be gentle with yourself, I hope you have an easy recovery and healing time.
  • I've basically been a "pity party" of one for the past few days. No exercise, eating too much, etc. I can't do that though. Gotta get my act together. There are still exercises I can do without using my ankle, like free weights while sitting and stuff.

Suck it up, Courtney and GIT-R-DONE!
  • Injuries are super hard. Yay for the hand weights idea. Good luck!
  • You may want to look up "Chair dancing" on youtube. They're exercise programs designed for folks in wheelchairs or who can't stand or walk steadily. But they're a great option when your leg mobility is temporarily lessened.

Hope you feel better soon! Definitely agree that you shouldn't push it. I tried to push through a knee injury earlier this year, and I'm still feeling the effects. It's taking months to heal rather than weeks. *sigh* I get too impatient.

I do ^this^ all the time, since I have two bad knees (one is a bit worse than the other). You'll be surprised how much it helps; and you are still burning calories. I also do hand-weights EOD, and toning exercises (on my bed and a chair) every day.

Try your best to keep to your eating plan and that should help you not gain while you heal.
  • By the way, there is a book called "get fit while you sit" which is helpful
  • I'm looking forward to being able to do some light walking next week!

I'll definitely look up the chair dancing and the books. I know at work I can do little things while sitting at my desk too.
  • Hang in there HealthyMeWannabe it will be healed in no time!!
