9 Miles, 50 Pounds...I can do this!

  • I'm finally down 50 pnds. SO close to Onederland and I'm now a serious walker. My goal is to get to the half marathon level. We walked 9 miles today and I'm just so proud that I did it! Ok, I wanted to throw up/die a few times, but at least I did it!! Actually, I've walked that distance several times now and at a pretty good pace.

From a serious couch potato/fast food queen to an active, more well-balanced girl. So excited!! And....people are noticing.

This started with just one day. I wanted to try not a week or month of healthy eating and smaller portions, but just ONE day. And it was actually doable. SO I tried the next day and the next, and so on. If I can do this, anyone can.
  • Awesome!!
  • Congratulations!!! That's really inspiring! Well done, you!
  • Wow! You've come a long way (no pun intended...).

I think you really hit the nail on the head. Yeah, we're in this forever. Yeah, we have a long way to go. Yeah, it can be overwhelming at times when you have lost what would get most people down to normal weight and you still have 100 pounds to lose.

But it really gets down to one day at a time. Yesterday's gone and there's no way to change it. Tomorrow is tomorrow's worry. Today is the only day you can make a change, make a decision with each forkful, or each walk, or each "no, I won't eat that today".

You are an inspiration. Thank you!
  • I love reading posts like this!! Congratulations!
  • I am so proud of your nine miles too! That's exciting! Are you planning on walking any half marathons? I know in San Diego there are a lot of people who do it (even whole walking team). I don't know what part of the country you're in but Disneyland and Disney World have half marathons and there's always the rock'n roll half. Yay! You've accomplished so much!
  • Congrats! I am so thrilled for you and very proud of you. Are you walking with a group of people or solo? How many months did it take you to get to that level? I can't wait to hear your half-marathon story. Best of luck.
  • That is fantastic!
  • Thanks everyone! I live about an hour from Disneyland and would be very interested in doing the Tinker Bell Half Marathon. I don't think I'm a runner, but my goal is to walk just fast enough to stay in it. I think it;s something like a 14 min mile (which I did the time before last).

I've been walking for about about 2 months. I did 1-2.5 miles at first, then my wonderful son started asking to go on walks, so we went from my house all the way up to a grocery store. Wherever you go, you have to go back and I kind of like having a destination as opposed to walking in circles.

The one thing I've learned...I can DO WAY MORE than I thought I could. My head tells me I'm tired and my body hurts, but I am able to keep up. I walk with two other friends. I don't know that I could do 9 miles on my own. It's a serious head game too.

The distance is not easy. I wasn't out of breath, but my body really did hurt and I did feel a bit woozy, but after a quick break to drink and breath, I was fine.

By the way...according to my Runkeeper I burned 1100 calories. I was also down 1 pnd afterward! : )
  • Fantastic job. Just fantastic. You have such a great outlook on this whole process. I love reading your posts. I totally agree with the "just once" concept. Just once - over and over again.
