How'd you choose your GOAL weight?
 
Did you choose a weight you once were? Go by a chart? Looking at a size? Just wondering how other people are choosing what their goal weight should be! :D

I chose a weight that seemed attainable for the immediate future. If you set the bar too low, in my experience, it can look kind of overwhelming. Choose a goal you're happy with and also feel positive and confident about reaching.

And having mini-goals is always great, too!

I initially set my goal at the highest weight a person should weigh at my height according to BMI charts—140 pounds.

I overshot it, as you can see.

I chose 140-160.

140 because it was my naturally settled weight when I was in high school, 160 because I am now 28 and know that I probably can't expect to maintain a high school weight. I think I would be content at 160.

But I'll see what happens when I get near there. :)

I too initially chose the highest healthy weight for my frame and height according to bmi charts. After that i just went by how i felt.

Gosh, I guess that really is at the heart of it, for me. I don't want to get too overwhelmed but at the same time, I want to be at a weight that I'm officially, clinically at a healthy weight. I think setting mini goals might be a good way to split the difference. Thanks!

Ohh, I like how you broke up your weight goals by clinical weight classifications. That had to feel good to "check off" the list! I might have to steal this idea from you! ;)

If I go by the CDC chart, I should weigh between 101-136. So I think I'm picking 125 because one, I'd like to be able to say I weigh "a buck and a quarter" and two, that gives me a little big of room for weight fluctuations but still be in a healthy range.

i've been told that at less than five-three, i should weigh no more than 115.

i don't know who was smoking crack when they came up with that bec i can't go below 125 without looking like something insectoid, what with all the bones jutting out in places they ought not to be.

my range is 125 - 140, whichever will get me below a 28" waist. if i could get back the 26" waist i had when i was 24 (after i lost 110lbs), that'd be bonus.

i'd be perfectly happy staying 230lbs so long's i had a 28" waist and 18% bodyfat!

I had a basic idea of losing 100 lbs and a dream goal that's 20 lbs lighter than that. But honestly I let my body kind of pick the weight based on where the weight loss stopped. I pretty much eat the same calories and exercise the same amount as when I was losing, but now my body is a lot smaller so needs less.

Mine is just based on previous weights and how I looked and felt but am flexible. In my gut I'm thinking I'm going to have to get to 135 but I'm also getting into clothes now that I'd never be able to wear at this weight before so we'll see. I'm horridly disproportionate with most of my weight in my thighs right now (SO annoying!!).

Many things factored in. BMI charts for my height say 120 - 160 is "normal." I have a medium - large frame, so I figured somewhere below the top end of that range was good. I chose 152 at first because it was 100 pounds and it was about what I weighed in my early 30's. I was about 140 - 145 in high school. At 60, I figured that was not a "keepable" weight. When I got to 80 pounds, I realized I was starting to get baggier than I wanted to be and called a halt at 90 pounds because of it. I've been holding there for 6 months and I'm good at 160 - 162.

Set a goal that is healthy and attainable. Then adjust as you get close. You younger members have the advantage of younger skin that will probably snap back a bit better than mine did. It took me a while to allow myself to consider stopping. (I didn't quit - I stopped. To me there is a difference.) Allow yourself to adjust without feeling like you gave up. then just jump in with both feet and do it!

I chose 135 because that is what my Dr. said was the best weight for my body. I havenīt weighed that since I was 15 and it seems so far away...haha. Honestly I would be happy to maintain at 150. I think you should stop when you feel right, not at a particular number.

I know I could weigh less than I do, but I'm NOT willing to devote that much time and energy to maintaining it, I'm just not.

When I first started at 323 pounds, I thought "I want to get down to 220 because I remember feeling good at that"

Once I hit that (that took a while! i'd do 40 pounds and STAY at that weight to be sure I could live like that) I thought "hey, under 200 would be cool" so then I did that

After that, I just lived my life the way I wanted to, exercised as much as I could (not in a gym, just being active outside, extreme housecleaning lol) and seemed to have naturally settled about 160ish...

I've gone about 8 weeks without sugar, and I've managed to lose another 8 pounds but I don't think that's permanent.

I had a really hard time trying to decide on a goal weight. Maybe it's because I tend to think more along the lines of the mini goals. I've always been overweight so there isn't really a particular number I could look back on and think..."Ya know, I'd be comfortable if I could get back down to XXX." Basically, I looked up the CDC chart, which lists a healthy range for my height to be 104-144, and I picked 115. Maybe closer to the end, I'll adjust it to fit my lifestyle but for now it gives me an actual to work towards. :)

Like others, I just set a goal that would put me just inside the "normal" weight for my height according to BMI charts (147 lbs). I wanted to never, ever hear another doctor tell me that I needed to lose weight, and I wanted to know that I was truly, for the first time since I was 12 years old, a normal, healthy weight. (Edit: I did, though, use a bunch of mini goals along the way to help keep me motivated and to see that I was making real progress. They're still in my signature because I still feel proud of having reached each one of them, and I want to remember that feeling of accomplishment.)

I think I was healthy though above 147 lbs, and if I had stayed around 155-160 I would have been reasonably content there. I like the way I look at my current weight a lot better, but I don't necessarily think I'm any healthier now than I was at 160 considering my habits - healthy eating, lots of exercise. At this point, wanting to get down to 135 is just vanity. I like the thought of having a bit of a buffer between my weight and the top end of the "normal" range, and I think I'll be able to handle what needs to be done to maintain at 135. So that's where my revised goal is now.

My other new goal is to get my body fat in the 21-24% range. I had it tested the other day and it came out at 24.5%. Not sure I totally trust the method that was used (I was expecting my bf % to be higher), but I'm going to have it done another way this week to see how the results compare.

I did what a lot of people did and just picked the highest normal weight limit I could find. At the start this seemed like an impossible challenge (110 lbs to lose) so I made sure I had loads of mini-goals built in, which felt a lot more achievable!

However once I got within 20lbs of my ultimate goal I started playing with the idea of shifting it back further and losing another 15-20 lbs so I could have a bit of a buffer and just to see how it would look since I've never once in my entire life been what one could consider slim.

I chose my goal weight because I've been that weight before and I know I looked good. Once I'm there I'm sure I'll try for 135-140, but I know I would be so happy at 150!

I chose a goal weight that was at the upper end of what the charts say is a normal weight for someone my height. Once I get there, I'll evaluate whether or not I want to lose more. What I want is to be healthy, to be able to do the activities I want to do, and look good. So if I get to 160, and I find that I feel great, can hike and ride roller coasters and do all those things thatare difficult for me now, and no longer look like a fat blob, then maybe that's where I'll stay.

I used BMI and doctor charts which usually vary from 115 to 137 for my height. In the past I was just happy to get into the 160's because i felt and looked descent. Well, I decided I'm not going to sell myself short this time around, I'm going for a weight that will make me look GOOD not just descent. Before my first Baby, I weighed 142 and was in a size 10 and I still felt chunky, so once I get to 130 I will evaluate if that's the right weight for me. The biggest change in my plan for weight loss this time is making a plan for maintenance--realizing getting the weight off is only half the battle, keeping it off is the other!
I've also got mini-goals listed that are based on weights I've been at in the past and I have even smaller goals like my dancing guy for each 5 lbs lost and getting into a new decade thread:D They are important to me since I have to far to go.

I chose my first goal weight, because while it is a lot to lose, I feel like it is attainable. Once I get there, I will maintain and then see what happens after that.

Many years ago a doctor told me me 150 would be a great goal, and it was an easy number to remember. Heh, wish it was as easy to get down to. ;)

I chose my goal weight because I have been there before and I know it was even a challenge way back then but I felt good. I just went on the BMI charts after reading this post and my goal weight is on the VERY top range of "healthy." hmm. Go figure :)
