Is Weighing In Every Day Good??

  • I'm torn right now between doing daily weigh-ins (to catch myself early if I'm doing something wrong) and weekly ones, as WW calls for.

    I heard from a therapist once that daily weigh-ins can lead to emotional stress eating.

    What do you guys think? Is it good, or will it hurt in the long run?
  • it all depends on who you are. Some people here do it everyday some people don't. I now realize I am the later. It causes me alot of distress. So the battery in my scales are two floors down from where my scale is. Once a month they will meet up.
  • I like daily weighing, not because it will catch me doing something wrong, but because it helps me see that there can be daily fluctuations even when the general trend is downward. I'm on WW and weigh daily, but WW logs my weight once a week.
  • I weigh in everyday, but it's with the understanding that weight fluctuates throughout the day, and over the course of a week. While I do weigh everyday, it's not consistent and I don't track it. I only count my Sunday weight because I make sure to be consistent with the time of day. Mostly, I weigh everyday as sort of a scientific experiment with what I have eaten the day before. I do this because I'm just starting out and I'm trying to get a gauge on what is working and what isn't. For example: this morning, I weighed one pound more than yesterday (my official weigh day). I wanted to see how the diet soda I had yesterday affected me, and I realize I should limit myself to one a week instead of 4! I will probably skip weighing daily the longer I'm in this and the more familiar I get with what's working.
  • I WANT to be a weekly weigher, but I keep managing to step on the scale (I have no scale will-power apparently). So after my official weigh in tomorrow, I'm going to ask my husband to put the battery away for me, and to not give it back for 1 week....this will be my trial. I will have done 1 week of daily weigh ins, and one week where I don't even look at the scale to see which suits me better.
  • When I was actively losing, I would weigh in once a week. Once I hit maintenance I started every day, and it has really opened my eyes to fluctuations and how my body reacts when I eat certain things.
  • I weigh daily because if I weighed once a week, I'd build up crazy expectations and be disappointed. This way I can see the overall trend. I keep an excel spreadsheet that tracks my 7 day average, so even if I bounce up for a day or two, I can see that the overall trend is down.
  • The first half of my weight loss journey I weighed once a week on a Friday am. The second half I moved to daily weigh ins but as I got closer to goal this started turning into a bad idea.
    Although I knew my body fluctuated daily, it got to the point where I really couldn't handle it, two out of three weigh ins left me in a real down mood for the rest of the day. So as of last week I've gone back to weekly weigh ins. Got weighed last Friday and trying to wait til this Friday before I weigh again. Will see how that goes...
  • I read online that people who weighed daily lost 12 pounds, where people who weighed weekly only lost 6. I weigh first thing every morning. But, as with most things, you gotta choose what works best for you.
  • I'm a weekly weigher. I can't handle the daily shifts even if I know the reason for an upward one. I'm much happier only seeing it once a week. You could always try weighing everyday, if you can handle it, that's great, if not you can move to weekly.
  • I'm a weekly weigher right now because the battery is dead in my scale so I'm only being weighed in at my WW meetings.
    Once i'm not so broke, I'm going back to daily weighing. I know my weight changes daily and I would like to go back to tracking those changes.

    I also find it keeps me more realistic about my weight. Right now, I have the "its 4pm, I have clothes on, i ate a ton today" excuses
  • I weigh daily. It works for me - I like seeing what happens day to day. Like another poster mentioned, I think if I weighed weekly I'd build up expectation too, and then possibly be disappointed.
  • I dont own A scale, but I weigh every time I go to the gym. When we had a scale in the house, I obsessed, and it caused me to stop working out because I wasnt losing anything. Now I want to weigh once a week, but, it pretty much turns into a daily thing because I cant help myself. Its hard on me though, becauseI feel like nothing is happining, even though I lost 6 pounds in two weeks.
  • I weigh in several times a week but try not to do the daily weigh-in. I just started the IP diet and was really curious my first week so found myself stepping on it more than I did when I was on WW. The body fluctuates so much it can really play tricks on your mind doing it too often but that's just my opinion. Good Luck!
  • I have to weigh every day.

    I am a major procrastinator in every aspect of my life and it's too easy for me to fool myself into thinking if I slack off on something now I have time to make it up later.

    So when I used to go to Weight Watchers some years ago, it was very hard not to overeat after my meeting because I had a WHOLE WEEK until I was going to be weighed again in which to make up for overeating that one day. Weighing every day prevents me from playing that game.

    Weighing every day lets me see, claim, and celebrate the fluctuations downward as well as the fluctuations upward. I keep track of my "current low" even though on any particular day my weight might be a pound or two up from that current low. And it's very helpful to me to see all the fluctuations, start to learn my body's patterns.
