  • Began this journey at 298. I have lost 71 lbs and feel good, but am trying to find a suitable goal weight to aim for.Just was wondering what other peoples goal weigts are at 5 foot 7 inches tall, and perhaps why you chose that goal.
    Thanks
    Sam
  • I've been giving this a lot of thought. On the one hand I would like to be around 145, but I also don't want to set myself up for a goal that I might not be able to obtain. Right now I will be thrilled if I can see 160 and then I'll take it from there.
  • Initially I chose the top weight in the "healthy" BMI range for my height. This was 200 pounds. When I got there, I revised my goal lower as I think I can maintain something smaller.

For your height, the top healthy category is 159. Once you get down there or close, you can either decide if that is good for you or if you would like to lose a bit more.
  • I'm truly not sure. My original goal was to lose 100 lbs. As I got close to that, decided to aim for a weight in the healthy BMI range. However once I reached 163, I'm pretty happy with my figure. So for now I'm still keeping a calorie deficit going but only by a few hundred calories per day and will see where my weight lands at end of the year and then re-evaluate.
  • I picked 150 because I was able to maintain that weight for a long time and I looked pretty good. When I reach it, I will re-evaluate.
  • I picked 135 because it's 10 pounds into "normal" for me. At 100 pounds away from that it was just a shot in the dark. Now that I'm closer, I really want to get to 145 at which point I MAY switch my thought process to maintenance and see what happens, hoping to lose ten more but not really caring how long it takes. I don't know. I'm pretty darn happy where I am at 160.

You can't predict what you're body's going to do. I think I'm heavier than I look at this point. Some people don't carry 160 pounds very well at 5'4" and I know a lot of women cry "whoa-is-me" at that point and know it's time to get the pounds off. But I'm in a size 8...I'm happy.
  • I'm picking 153, because it is half of me. My starting weight was 306.
  • Thanks your answers are very helpful. It is very difficult to decide what the right weight is. The healthy weight range is a good guide, but I wonder about what I will look like almost half the size I used to be !!
  • I chose 135 because I have been and maintained that before. I have been as low as 116 and that was a bad scene.
  • I have no idea. I'll decide when I get closer.

The body weight charts put the top of the healthy range for my weight at 150. I have never been 150 - even when I was fairly trim in high school I was around 160. I am muscular, built like an ox, with big hips and big breasts. Bt then, everyone thinks their body type is special or some kind of exception to the rule, so I can't say for certain that 150 is impossible for me.

With all of that, I don't see any point in picking a goal weight now. It won't change anything about what I have to do today, so I just don't think it's something I have to think about now. When I get into the 170, 175 range, I'll start giving it some thought.

In the end, I'll probably set a body fat percentage goal rather than a weight goal.
  • I started at 274 (I'm just shy of 5'6") and chose 137 as a goal weight for a few reasons:
    1. it's HALF of my starting weight! Wow.
    2. My wii Fit says 136.9 is my "ideal" weight
    3. I weighed between 135-140 in high school. I've never been a "skinny" girl, but I was healthy then (even though I *thought* I was fat!)

Realistically, I know I'm not in my teens anymore and I'm not sure how any kind of "normal" weight will look on me now that I'm in my 30's. I've been overweight or obese most of my adult life! 154 would put me just into the "normal" BMI range for my height, so I definitely want to get down to 150 or so at least, then I guess I'll take it from there.

For now though, I'll keep aiming for 137.
  • I'm aiming for 145, which is the top range of normal for me. I have no idea what I'll feel like at that weight because I don't even know when I was that weight before, I've been overweight (obese) for a LONG time, all through my childhood pretty much. Anyways I'm choosing that for now and may re-evaluate as I keep going!
  • I've always had this idea that 132 would be my goal number, mostly because that would be the 100 lbs marker for me, and it's solidly in my healthy bmi. Realistically, I think I there might be a chance that I feel too small at that number, because I'm a pretty athletic build and am pretty muscular. All the same, it's the number that I'm shooting for!
  • I want to be at 133 which is smack in the middle of my healthy weight range according to BMI, and coincidentally, exactly half my starting weight.
  • 160. That's 20 lbs less than I weighed my jr year of high school. I chose it because when I was at 180, I didn't look like it at all. I remember being at the docs office with my mom and her looking at the scale and gasping when I got on because I didn't look like I weighed that much. and I was shorter then than I am now. The healthy BMI of someone of my height is 130-140. I know I would NOT look good at either of those weights, so I chose 160. I still want to look soft and curvy, just slim.

I'm not going to treat the BMI chart as if it is law, so I don't mind having a weight thats above the 'healthy' range.
