Went to see the doctor today. Finally got back on Metformin. The visit wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. He was disappointed in my weight still-expecting more weight. The scale at the doc's office showed me at 281 but oh well. I am judging my weight loss on my scale at home.
Anyway, we discussed weight loss and I told him some of my ideas and he said to try them all! Some of these ideas were protein bars, protein shakes, and fasting liquids. I went to pull out my journal and show him the progress I have made on his advice of sticking to 1500 calories a day and he interupted and said, "1500? You should reallybe at 1000." What? It's hard enough to do 1500 a day but 1000? He said he wants me to lose 2 lbs a week (which is my plan anyway). He didn't say it in so many words but he was basically saying he didn't care how I lost the weight but as long as I was able to get out of my "danger zone"- or in other words obesity range.
Good thing he told me before I ate! I am somewhere around 1200 today due to a small binge when I got home after being starving all day!
I'm glad everything went well! I understand binges, I am doing WW and had so many points left I decided to make and eat 2 Peanut butter sandwiches and now my tummy really hurts I won't be doing that again!! I have basically the same goals as you if you want to become buddies.
really? He really said he wants you at 1000 calories a day? Does he not realize that he is setting you up to be hungry constantly? I think I'd be finding a new doctor personally.
Shelly-- I hate to contradict your doctor, but with all due respect, I think his advice seems kind of shaky!
At your weight, you can easily lose 2 lbs a week by eating a balanced diet-- most people on this board stay well ABOVE 1200 and still lose. Some of us eat 1200 because we feel like that's enough.... when I was younger I'm positive I could not have stuck to 1200 but maybe I could stick to 1500.
You need to pick a number of calories you can ACTUALLY STICK TO and then stick to it....
There's no reason to go that low to lose 2lbs a week!!!
Ubergirl- I agree. I told him that I would feelmore comfortable at 1200 and he said he couldn't make me do 1000 but that is what he suggested. I said I would resort 1000 when I see no results after already cutting down and exercising.
Neast- absolutely! what are you doing now to help you in your losing?
I am following weight watchers. I am writing down every bite I eat. I am also eating fruits and veggies, which I hardly did before. I have also cut wayyyy back on fast food. I am on the go alot, but now make better food choices.
Wow, that's really low! I started at 287, and I have never eaten less than 1300 a day all year, and my average loss is 1.7 a week. I know it would be more if I had stuck to under 1800 per day (my spark people range has varied from 1300-1800 or so). It's just those times I fell off all dieting this year and quit everything that drug my average down
In any event, I hope you find something that works for you!
I actually ended up cutting out all fastfood. I went on a business lunch a couple weeks ago to Olive Garden and I actually had to get up in the middle of the meal to go to the bathroom. My stomach completely disagreed. ABout a month ago I treated myself to the dollar Arby's roast beef sandwich and a small fry and the entire weekend I thought I was going to die! Horrible! I don't even crave that stuff anymore. I'm sure I will in the future but right now, I crave my smallhomemade turkey and lettuce sandwiches and my morning banana and fatfree yogurt smoothie. The better you get with your diet, the easier it gets to make healthy choices.
Shelley - I don't know how long you have been at this, but @ 280, 1000 calories seems low. It seems like the "standard" is not to go below 1200. In my humble opinion, I'd stick to your original 1500 and see how you do. You are much better off cleaning up what you eat with those 1500 calories (yes, I have no idea how you already eat) than you are eating less calories. I know this seems like something that needs to be done in an instant, but it doesn't happen that way no matter how low you go and in fact sometimes going that low stalls you. Plus at that low, you stand a better chance of going off plan because you are so hungry.
Maybe 1000 net calories, after exercise?
IMO, at 280, you'll lose significantly at 1800 calories until Onederland. Saying "Try everything" makes it sound like he knows you're serious and is letting you judge or your own body.
I don't think he's ever tried to do 1000 cals a day. Kind of crazy
Souvinir- haha, I don't think he has ever had to worry about his weight!
Sandi- again, this wasn't my idea, this was my doctors. I am sticking to my plan of 1200 and going from there. I have been trying to lose weight for a very long time so I am aware that 1000 is not a good idea. Thank you for you concern and support though!
If you have insurance and it will cover it, I would suggest you go see a nutritionist. They can give you a safe number of calories for weight loss. And if your doctor wants you to stick with 1000 cals a day, shouldn't you be monitored. I know with those VLCD they monitor you I think weekly.
