Salsa's revelation of the day

Yesterday I needed to get some more butter (well, "butter," my spread stuff that's supposed to be good for your heart and stuff was running out). Standing in front of the wall of butter and butter-type stuff in the supermarket, on a whim I got a small tub of spreadable butter from the supermarket's own brand.

And oh my it tastes wonderful. I just had a little bit spread on toast with strawberry jam (teeny tiny bit spread out - this stuff has to last!) and the difference in taste...wow!

I'm not going back. I may have to be very spartan with it on my toast, but I'm not going back. Not for all the Omega 3, 6, 12, or 8492 out there.

:stir:

I'm with you. I have never used butter substitutes. Much better to limit the amount than eat synthetics, IMO.

I always get the I Can't Believe Its Not Butter spray for 0 cals. I put a couple squirts and it does the trick. I've noticed that realy butter and greasy foods now make me feel awful. I had 2 slices of low sodium bacon yesterday morning with my breakfast and I swear I could smell bacon all day and wanted to vomit. Which is insane because I used to L-O-V-E some bacon!

Yeah, I'm a more natural girl myself. I figure real butter in moderation has to be better than margarine and all the other synthetic "stuff". I'd almost rather eat dry toast.

paris81 01-09-2010 09:29 AM

I agree with keeping it natural. I don't often use butter, but when I do, it's real. So much better!

Lori Bell 01-09-2010 10:26 AM

Yep...I don't use the fake stuff either. Actually I rarely even use butter. (Christmas and Thanksgiving treat!) I have learned to live very well without it. If I want something on my toast in the morning I put my egg on top of it!

Wow...then end of December I had to buy butter too. I just stood there... there were so many choices. I ended up buying the omega whatever... and then I had guests over New Years Eve for dinner...I have real butter sticks so I put one of those out along with the other omega stuff...all the skinny folks talked about butter vs the other... it was interesting. I really do believe the more natural stuff is better for me.

dragonwoman64 01-09-2010 10:43 AM

yep, me too. I don't use sugar substitutes either. I live in NYC, I figure I'm getting so many chemicals infused into me just existing here, I'm better off trying to keep the ones I purposefully ingest to a minimum, doh!

SugarJunkie 01-09-2010 10:43 AM

I'm a firm believer in limited amounts of the real thing. The synthetics make me feel sludgy, so I'd rather have a small bit of the real thin on a rare occasion.

(I'm big on that with Soda. No diet for me, I'll just have a small glass of real "Coke" or whatever, once in a great while.)

Artificial sweeteners give me migraines, so I'm happy to not use them! It's all water for me and a carefully measured bit of sugar with the calorie count in mind when necessary.

I love Smart Balance (or Earth Balance for my soy free fix)! Only the original one though not any of the "light" or "super omega-mix" or whatever. I actually enjoy it more than butter (although some things call for a sweet cream euro-style butter) especially "spreadable" butter. Bonus is that I can still eat SB while I'm doing my 21 day vegan thang. And also long as there are no hydrogenated oils I don't think oil spreads are bad.

I do loath all artificial sweeteners though.

Glad you were able to get happy finding you could have a bit of the real stuff in moderation!

ubergirl 01-09-2010 12:19 PM

Butter comes from cows. Margarine comes from factories.

I cut out both, but I give butter to my family.

I'm working on the real "in moderation" bit - at the moment it's mainly due to financial reasons that I'm so sparing with it. I guess it's a good thing my financial outlook for the next couple of years at least is poor to middling... in the meanwhile I'll try to build up all the right attitudes :)

you'll have to pry my Diet Coke out of my cold dead hands, but aside from those and a little bit of Splenda (I just think it's easier to use since it dissolves so easily in tea), I try to stick with smaller quantities of real food. But I love Diet Coke, and don't even like the taste of regular Coke, so this is a taste issue, not a calorie one for me.

but definitely yes on small amounts of real butter. yum!

Right there with ya! I was one of those women that would order a cheeseburger and a diet coke. Not because I thought I was saving calories but because I really don't like things with sugar in them. I have even always drank alcoholic drinks with diet soda when I could. But that's where it ends for me, too. I eat natural butter and don't really like fake sugar in other products. I recently tried some fat-free sour cream and hated it. I figure I will just keep eating real sour cream but very sparingly. I won't eat foods I don't like.
