Ah, yes the gym in January. I resolve not to grumble tooooo much about having to wait for machines. Be nice to the new folks, Nada, some of them might stick around.

I rejoined WW about a month ago. Might as well make it to goal weight in 2010! So near and yet so far!

I'm signing up today for a race at midnight Dec 31th! 3.5 miles. I'm not worried about the distance ---I'm worried about running at midnight, hoping adrenaline will keep me awake!!

Work on doing a real push-up.

I'm thinking of joining a gym eventually, maybe 1/3 way to goal, but I'd like it not to be too hectic. When/ what month would you guys advise me to join then?

Wow, Nada! I am doing a 5K (3.1 miles) on New Year's Day - but it's not til noon, so I have time for a midnight toast and still sleep in a bit. I give you major props for running at midnight!

Symmetry, I would say go to a gym or two in your area during the time(s) when you'd be going and see what the activity is like. You may find it's not that bad even in January.

Hey! I'm in San Diego (and we've gone cycling before, actually, around Mission Bay). Are you accepting more people into your sunday cycling group? I'd love to join! I'm very bad at hills, and there's a lot of those here.

Symmetry: I think LitChick has the right idea. If you have friends that have joined the gym, they can usually get you in for free so you can check it out.

Thanks for this post! As someone who just came back after a almost 9 month hiatus binge fest and 30lb+ weight gain...I can say, I plan on continuing the great non-weight loss things I've accomplished this year: being kinder to myself (not including treating with food), encourage my new friends and boyfriend to get healthy with me, track my eating.

I also keyed in on a few things about myself as I sat here re-committing. I have just traded old addictions/ compulsions (alcohol, drugs, sex) for a more socially acceptable one: food! I started last night and will continue to acknowledge that I am an all around addict and seek treatment for it via online Overeaters Annonymous support.

Here's to finally getting a grip in 2010!

My #1 thing is to get a treadmill in the next few weeks. So I can continue to walk/jog and improve my distance and times.

I didn't join here until around March (?) 2009 and had no idea that there would be a rush on NYE. I guess it never occurred to me. But duh! I can be kind of dense sometimes. I started in October 2008. I do wish the very best to everyone starting!

Awesome thread!

I am determined not to give up after two or three months because 2010 is the start of a new decade so I want to go into the new decade being healthy and happy... and keep that way for the next ten years!

Also, I signed up to do a 40-mile walk in March so I'm getting my father to buy me some suitable walking boots so I can train in them for the walk and wear them for the actual event! I want to prove to my dad that I can stick to this goal :]

I will be 28 when the decade is over and I want to be able to look back at the last 10 years, being proud and happy of what I've achieved. Eg) losing weight and being healthy, finish college, go into university, get a good job, etc.

My college is offering a very cheap membership at the gym for students, I think it's something like 10 a year! So that will be a great opportunity to go to the gym and it's a great way of saving money!

xo, Beth

After 3 1/2 years of plodding along, this healthy living business is finally a habit, so there's no reason to quit now. I'm signed up to run a 5K on New Year's Day as well (though mine starts at 9:30 in the morning, so I will probably skip ringing in the new year this time around.) I'm also in the middle of the 90-day P90X program, so I'll keep going with that into February, then probably start all over again for another 90 days.

My best advice for newbies is to change up your routine as soon as you start to get bored. Boredom is the quickest way to burn out. And if you need ideas, this is a great place to get them. Just ask; chances are someone around here has been where you are, and can suggest something new that will work for you.
