Snowboarding

  • I have always wanted to try to snowboard but never got to since I have always been overweight.
Does anyone here snowboard or have any advice? I really want to try it out!
  • I dont snowboard-- i telemark--- but i have TRIED snowboarding. Give it a good 3 or 4 times before you decide you hate it/like it/can/cant do it. Seriously, as soon as "it" clicks it will click. Wear a butt pad ( you think im kidding?) like Hockey shorts that have the built in hip/butt/leg pads. You will thank me. You will spend the first couple times on your butt. DRESS REALLY WARM. You wont be *good* enough to work up a sweat at first. Of Course, wear a helmet
  • I love snowboarding. I started overweight and yes it'll be a lot of really hard work but worth it and so much fun.
Definetly try it more than once or twice. The first couple/few times can be really frustrating, and you Will be sore.
    But worth it!
  • thanks for the advice on the butt pads mkroyer it definitely sounds like i will have to get those haha!

nicollem do you know anything about the snowboards to use? i heard they have a weight limit
  • Your weight shouldn't interfere with snowboarding. Please, please, please be properly fitted for gear. That can make all the difference in the world!
  • Be ready to find muscles are sore that you didn't know you had! I love it though. Big calorie burner.
  • i'm a newbie at snowboarding, but it's a ton of fun. this will only be my second season, so i'm definitely still learning =)

as everyone says, it will be frustrating the first day or two, but don't give up, because its worth it once you get the hang of it! the most difficult part for me is getting up once you find yourself sitting in the snow. most people just dig their board into the snow and kinda do a giant sit-up but i really struggled with that (most likely because of all my extra cushioning!!!!). finally i figured out that if i roll over onto my tummy, i can dig my toes in and use my arms to get up pretty easily!

    i hope this helps!!
  • Jazzing i heard that getting up was the hardest part but i found little exercises to do online so im going to try them haha!

I signed up for a snowboarding class in December, im excited!
  • Snowboarding is indeed a blast. Good choice on signing up for a class. As many have already said, the first couple/three days are the worst. Snowboarders either fall on their rear or their face. Either is not very appealing, but be prepared. I will hopefully be snowboarding again next season. Have fun.
  • taking a class is a GREAT idea. i wish i did that!! i probably would have picked it up quicker, and spent a few less hours on my bum! but it is fun once you've got it down =) i just planned a trip in december too, and i can't wait!
