Based on any sort of real, verifiable science? NOT AT ALL. Also, from Dr. Andrew Weil:

Not that I am disagreeing with you but the problem as I see it is that people don't read the master cleanser books and don't know what the whole thing is about and I'm not going to go into it here. People see it as a weight loss fad and that was not the intention of the man who developed this. It was meant primarily as a detoxification program followed adopting a raw fruit/veg type diet.

I don't advocate the master cleanser for anyone. I'm relating the fact that my husband and I did it and what happened for us.

Finally about science....traditional medicine is not the be all and end all of treatments that will help a person when they are ill. My husband had his gallbladder out 5 years ago and has never felt the same since. He's been to about 3 different specialists, had so many tests I could spend an hour writing out which ones and had scopes up and down the digestive system looking for the problem and could not find it and everyone basically threw up their hands and said we don't know what is wrong with you....the best they could do was to prescribe narcotics to stop the pain he was having (one of several symptoms)....the master cleanser gave him some relief and then finally he went to a naturopath who has helped him tremendously. Now having said all this know that I am a registered nurse, have been one for 10 years so traditional medicine is my thing. With all our technology and science we just don't know everything about the human body and how it works. What works for me might not work for you and vice versa and sometimes alternative medicines or treatments are the only thing that works. If my husband had not been willing to try something that was not real, verifiable science he'd still be in a lot of pain today and not able to work because the narcotics that dulled the pain made it impossible for him to work, as it is he is pain free, able to work and has a quality of life that is about a million times better than it was before.

My personal experience with it was that the effects are the exact same as fasting. I think the sugar in the maple syrup and the pepper just went the extra mile in completely throwing my stomach off track.

Like I said, it was an experiment born out of curiosity. Lesson learned. No more snake oil for me.
