inches vs. pounds

I've been overweight so long I don't know what a reasonable goal weight will be for me. So I've decided I want to get down to a 35 waist as an initial goal. That's the number that is supposed to be the top end of healthy. Now my question is: about how much does someone who is 5'6" tall weigh with a 35 inch waist? And is that about a size 16? Right now I am 20W with a few 22Ws thown in. Any idea how to translate this goal into a number on the scale?

It depends on body type, height, what exercises they do(cardio vs strength vs combo), age, etc. There is no way to tell.

Yeah judging by the different sizes people here report wearing and their height and weight it varies widely.

I'm just hoping to get a range of weights from people who have reached a 35 inch waist -- even if it's a 20 or 30 pound range it would give me some point of reference. Thanks.

I can't answer your weight question, but I just searched a couple size charts online. Looks like 35-inch waist is an 18 in the regular sizes and 16 in the plus sizes. Of course, you'll have to factor in your hip measurement as well, but you'll be in that range.

The rule of thumbe is that you should go down a size for every 7-10lbs you loose. However that is not always true for everyone it's just an average.

Totally not true! :p I've lost 12.6 pounds and no change in sizes. It wasn't till I was 230, I started to need new pants. :P

I would say 7-10 pounds per size is true once you hit a size 12 and below. I stayed in 16's and 14's forever!

For me, yes and yes.

I have lost 31 lbs and am still in the same size.

Although I can now zip/button my 22's, but they are snug. :P

I said in your other thread that this is around where I'm at but most of my weight is in my thighs. So for me, the answer probably would be around 210-220. If you are top heavy, it'd be a different answer, if you have less muscle it'd be a different answer, etc.

I think that it's so weird how weight and inches vary from person to person.

I'm 270 pounds, 5'11, and my clothes vary from 14-18. I'm the exact same size as someone who is roughly 50 pounds lighter than me. They are smaller than me up top but we wear the same size clothes. It doesn't make sense and it all depends how much muscle and what shape you are. I don't really have a goal size at this point. I'm way off the charts with weight versus size so I have no idea what that looks like for me.

Very true!
165-170 lb -- I'm in an 11-12
160 lb -- I'm in an 11
155 lb -- I'm in a 9/10

I'm 5'5.5" an wear 14-10 at 163! You must have model shaped bones woman! - Tall and skinny!

At 210 I was stuffing myself into a 16.

At around 180 my waist was 35 inches and now at 163 it is 32 inches - however, my waist is very defined and I know that some people just are not shaped the same way. People are different. Some women carry more weight in their stomachs and some have tiny waists and wide hips. - So I think it is good to set a goal but maybe (since the number you need is difficult to find) you could just use BMI for now (I would use the high end of the range for starters), or a clothing size and then you can see how you feel when you reach that. Personally, I had to do something else. I started running and I focus much more on my running goals than my weight loss goals. As long as I am eating on plan, I try not to stress the weight loss numbers and just focus on training. HTH

I just looked at my records and I was 214 and 36 inches. I was wearing size 18s ntight. I've always had a smaller waist than the rest of my body. Right now my ribcage is the same size as my waist.
