diet coke/pepsi

something weird i've noticed - well, not weird, it makes perfect sense, but still....

when i've had my slip ups, it's ALWAYS been when I've drinking diet pop - as in drinking it regularly, not once in a blue moon.

When i QUIT drinking it, I didn't snack. When i DO drink it, i need a 'little something' to go with it....

i think that's noteworthy!

I have the same problem with Diet Sodas... I tend to want to snack along with them. It's probably just an old habit, but if I'm drinking a Diet Coke I suddenly feel the urge to munch on some Cheez-its.

TJFitnessDiva 01-12-2009 02:52 PM

It doesn't do that for me. I am addicted to diet Barq's rootbeer (yes I am admitting that lol) though but limit myself to 2 a day as long as it's looking like I'm going good on regular water for the day. I don't really want to snack more when I'm drinking it but that doesn't say it might not be a trigger for you.

kittycat40 01-12-2009 03:17 PM

ohhh- I am now totally-otally craving diet coke!! luckily it does not have that effect on me. you know what does??-- after dinner evening tea-- gotta have sweets with it

JamieJo 01-12-2009 03:25 PM

I so have that problem with diet coke too!!!!!!!!!!! And I can't stop eating until the diet coke is gone.

JulieJ08 01-12-2009 03:29 PM

I have a similar correlation, but I'm not sure it's cause and effect so much for me, as that Diet Coke is my comfort food. If I'm eating less well, it's because I'm getting a little out of control i my life, very like not just with food. Then I drown my stress in Diet Coke.

rodeogirl 01-12-2009 03:34 PM

I don't associate eating with it but I do find that staying on plan in general works better sans soda of any sort. I pretty much drink water. I do have coffee on some days but generally only a tall nonfat latte or a cup of coffee or two in the morning to get me going.

gina1221 01-12-2009 07:17 PM

Fortunately this is not a problem for me. I usually will have a diet Pepsi or Coke Zero when I'm craving something sweet - but I still have to get my water in. I'm currently sitting here with my bottle of water nearly empty and an unopened Coke Zero... I can have the Coke Zero when the water is empty. :)

That's so odd. I have the opposite reaction to diet soda.

I drink diet Dr. Pepper like it's water. I probably have five to ten cans a day. A lot of times, when I'm feeling like I want something to eat, a diet Dr. Pepper will stop me.

I'm not sure if it's actually something in the diet coke- it's probably more that your mind associates the pleasure of soda with the pleasure of eating (probably because that's always what you used to do in the past).

Actually, if there is a physical/chemical reason, I'd be really interested to find out more about it, so let me know.

When I drink diet soda, eat sugar free jelly or stuff like that - my sugar craings go through the roof.

Dumplin 01-13-2009 12:33 AM

I have'nt drank any diet soda since July 2008. I believe it really help me in my weight loss but my other bad habits started up the week before Thanksgiving.... eating the wrong food. We took a small vacation with some out-of-town relatives .......we ate out alot.....Thanksgiving came.... over ate .......never got back on track.....Christmas came over ate.........had knee surgery jan 8th .......over ate.....I am so ready to stop overeating and start exercising and today will be the day I .......turn it all back around and focus on me because ......I am worth it!!!!!

For me, diet soda is a sweet treat that really satisfies me when I am eating strictily and not allowing any other sweets. I also drink some of the drinks like Sobe lean and Fuze--I just like the flavor and don't find it causes me to eat---I'm really glad for that!

lewelaine 01-13-2009 04:48 AM

I don't trust the contents of diet soda (or any soda..). weird fake chemicals and flavors are weird....and fake.

Your body doesn't want that garbage.

I am with Scarlet.. I really like the sweet treat it gives me.. So I guess it is my drug of choice. I know it is not good for me but I am not ready to give it up just yet!

I love Diet Dr. Pepper... But it makes me retain water and increases my sugar cravings.... I stick to herbal tea and water... :(

Michelle98272 01-13-2009 07:56 AM

Kinda off topic but somewhat "Diet Pepsi Related"...the person who posted about drinking 5-10 cans a day of Diet Dr. Pepper made me think of posting my public service announcement.

I've had issues with depression and anxiety for years that I've treated with Prozac. I had a few years where I felt like I was cured of that as I felt great without medication...Anyway...I somehow got addicted to Diet Pepsi and was drinking 6-8 cans a day. I ended up with the worst crushing depression ever and really disabling anxiety. I struggled with horrible headaches and insomnia, too. I had never had those symptoms with my depression. I couldn't get out of bed and was on the verge of suicide. I had never had any depressive episodes like that. When I finally got to the Dr. and told her I felt more depressed than I ever had...somehow we got on to the topic of diet. It came out that I was drinking so much Diet Pepsi. She surmised that the depression was brought on by Aspartame (artificial sweetner). Low and behold, I quit the Diet Pepsi and the depression switched from the worst ever depression to just the garden variety depression I was used to. I never believed the bad press about Aspartame but did after that!!

I do have to admit, I still LOVE Diet Pepsi and have some now and then. I limit myself to 1 can a day though.

Trazey, it's great how you identified your "problem". I think this is a big factor in weight loss. Identifying obstacles and then working around them. And those "problems" will change from time to time. Always good to be on the look out for them.

Diet sodas don't do this to me. I have a can of Cannefields Chocolate soda about 4x a week. Usually when I'm looking to eat, just to eat. This 0 calorie treat satisfies me.

I also find Diet soda to be a good diversion and a way of avoiding off plan FOOD while at a party or eating out. I'd much rather down the soda, then the food.

djay 01-13-2009 08:20 AM

Diet soda doesn't make me feel snacky...but it adds about 5 lbs. of bloat when I drink it on a regular basis. probably because I could drink it all day long and not drink water...and often did just that. Diet soda was a tough one for me to kick. I still treat myself to a bottle every week or so while I am out running errands and I find it keeps me satisfyingly ( is that a word yet?) full enough to stay out of the drive thru's So I have made my peace with it's place in my life now.

xJox 01-13-2009 08:21 AM

I think I am the opposite. I have a diet soda, and it helps me to avoid eating the crapola foods. Its like in my mind, that is my snack. Its hard to explain.

time2lose 01-13-2009 08:28 AM

I think that the desire to eat while having a diet drink is a learned habit like wanting to eat while watching tv.

I am also a Diet Dr. Pepper drinker but I have to limit myself to 2 cans a day to be sure that I get enough water in.

DCHound 01-13-2009 11:53 AM

Diet sodas trigger carb cravings for me, so I avoid them completely. I used to have several caffeine-free diet Pepsis a day when I was doing Atkins before, and I struggled with horrible carb cravings. I believe the diet Pepsi contributed to that. I haven't had one in six months and I am not struggling with carb cravings now. Just my $.02.

Badgerette 01-13-2009 07:49 PM

When I gave up sugar I switched to Coke Zero instead of Coke. I noticed I started getting cravings when I drank the diet soda. My feet swell if I drink diet soda now because of the high sodium content. I miss diet soda but had to realize that for me it's not a good choice, my body doesn't need the chemicals.

Thighs Be Gone 01-13-2009 08:06 PM

There is a theory that diet soda can make you want sweets more. The theory says that even though it doesn't effect your blood sugar, it does send the message to your brain that you are eating sweets and therefore, want more of them.
