Is it possible to gain 13 lbs of FAT in 6 days?

I stepped on the scale this morning and right back off again. On...off....WHAT?? My weight last Tuesday was 248 (wearing clothes @ WW weigh in) today it was 261 in my undies before getting in the shower at home. I literally weighed myself about 6 times within a 1.5 minute time frame...I got 261.2, 259.5, 260.0 twice. OMG!!

I ate as I normally would on Thanksgiving, nothing extraordinary, 1 plate of the typical stuff, pie and whipped cream, eggy cassarole for breakfast the next day. If I wasn't trying to lose weight, I'd expect to maintain the same but to have gained? I've never gained 12lbs in less than a week.

OH, I drove 6 hours there and 6 hours back, eating my favorite road trip food, salted sunflower seeds in the shell. Lots of salt in those...water weight?

I'm hoping this is water weight! I skipped my WW weigh in today in hopes, I 'll have something good to report NEXT Tues for weigh in day:o.

Any words of wisdom?

While gaining 13 pounds of fat is highly unlikely, you certainly could be retaining water, and maybe some extra weight.
Salted nuts certainly can do that for you, and also if you have more carbs than usual, your body will store extra glycogen (and it's associated water).

I would just get back on plan. Get to a meeting tomorrow if you can. The times when you don't want to go to your meeting is the time you need to go the most!

I'd say 7-8 pounds could easily be water. Get back on plan and I am sure you will be great in no time.

i think with all the salt you ate it is probably mostly water weight. Don't freak out too much, just get back on track and lay off the salt

Salted sunflower seeds? Oh yeah baby! Bring on the water weight.

Not saying you might not have gained a few pounds of fat, but I'd bet the vast majority of it is water.

Also, this is just me ... when I travel, whether it's driving for a long time, sitting on a plane, whatever ... I retain water like a madwoman. I love to travel and I love to drive, but bring on the bloat, when I do.

Words of wisdom: Drink LOTS of water to flush out that sodium and get in some extra exercise. It'll help.

It could be water weight but....
It could possibly be because you weighed in on two different scales. All scales are different. I know the scale at the gym weighs me 7 pounds heavier than my scale at home.
In order to save my sanity, I only weigh in at home !

PhotoChick 12-02-2008 10:05 PM

Oh Lordy. I totally missed that part.

NEVER weigh on a different scale. Ever. Not if you value your sanity. :)

My scale at home is my official scale. The scale at the gym weighs me nearly 10 lbs heavier. The scale at the drs weighs me 3 lbs heavier. The scale at my MILs place weighs me 3 lbs lighter (I think she's reset it, to be honest).

No two scales will weigh exactly alike. YOu may have picked up 3-4 lbs of water weight, but you'll never really know based on multiple scales. :)

I'm suffering from the same problem. Except my is 5lbs in one week. When I really didn't eat badly either. I'm hoping its just water as well. Lets cross our fingers Michelle and hope we are just bloated!! :) :)

I'm sure the two different scales is the main issue, also could be a little water weight. the scale at my gym weighs me about five lbs heavier too. stick to one scale and that will help

After much testing I found my home scale is about 6 lbs lighter than any doctors scale.

I'm in a research study and they are adamant that they only use one scale every time. They note which scale you were initially weighed on...and that is your scale!

A little water weight and the new scale...poof, there are all the pounds.

Michelle98272 12-03-2008 01:19 AM

I like the WW scale. It is the one that I use as my "official" scale. It's the one says the weight that goes in my little WW book. My scale at home is a digital one so it fluctuates as much as 3lbs on any given day but NEVER has it been this far off off the WW scale.

261 is freaking scary. That is my all time non pregnant high weight. It's approaching my 9 months pregnant high weight. Arghhh....!

I definitley think it is water. I went out to Starbucks with a girlfriend tonight and drank 32 ounces of decafe green tea and then another 16 ounces of ice water. When I weighed myself tonight only half undressed (still wearing bra, shirt, sweater) I'm already down 3 lbs from this morning. I also noticed my ankles hurt like they did when I was pregnant and carrying tons of extra water weight. You know when your skin feels like it is going to split?

Okay, it is official. I need get myself to a meeting, stay on track, to keep drinking water and *START* exercising. GASP!! I know I should have been already but I'm taking baby steps. I dislike exercising, so I thought I'd sneak up on it once I had a little weight loss success.

Thanks for all your help, ladies!

I dislike exercising for exercise sake but have found walking to school saves me gas money and is easier mentally. Do you have any place you can walk to for a purpose other than purely exercise?

Solution

I gain 10 pounds of water or more once a month - if you know what I mean. A good way to lose it fast is to drink lots of decaf iced tea.
I never weigh on a strange scale because they always seem to be off, never in my favor, then I get discouraged.
I'm sure you haven't gained 13 pounds.
Good luck!

Michelle98272 12-04-2008 02:29 PM

Water all gone!

It was definitely water. I'm back down to my original weight. I stepped on the scale this morning (home scale, still waiting on my WW meeting to get the "official" weight) and am 12 lbs lighter than I was the other day.

My trick was to drink 32oz of decaf green tea and then 16oz of plain water in one evening and then curse all night as I peed every hour or so. But I peed out all 12 lbs. :carrot:

I have now sworn off salted in the shell sunflower seeds. I LOVE them for road trips but definitely not worth the scare on the scale!!

WifeyBoo nice to meet you and welcome!!:D
