Why does my weight bounce around so much?
Help me! I weigh myself everyday (first thing in the morning, no clothes ;) ), and I have a high quality digital scale. So why do I lose and gain 3-4 pounds in a single day??
Here's an example: Fri - 235 Sat - 235.5 *Gained .5 Sun - 234 *Lost 1.5 Mon - 239 *How did I gain 5 lbs overnight?? Tues - 237 *Lost 2 Wed - 238.5 *Gained 1.5 Thurs - 235.5 *Lost 3 Is this normal? Its discouraging for me, because I find that my mood is so dependent upon what I see on the scale in the morning. Facing a Monday morning with an overnight 5 pound gain was horrible. But today I'm in a good mood because the scale was friendly. But overall, I'm up a half pound for the week. |
Hmm...I'm not sure. Would it help your mood if you only weighed once a week?

I notice flucuations also. I'll get on the scale on day @ 199, the next @ 197 and then I'll go back to 199. I weigh everyday but only record my offical weigh in which is on Thursday. It depends on a lot of things. I notice that if I drink a lot of water on a particular day for instance, I'll go home & probably be a pound heavier then I was this morning. It's not that I have gained weight, I've had a lot to drink! Same thing if I have a day where I don't eat much, I may come home 1 lbs lighter, when in actuality I haven't lost any weight, I just have no food in my stomach. Don't get discouraged. You're weight will flucuate on a daily sometimes even hourly basis. have you thought about only weighing 1 time a week instead of everyday? Some people can't handle weighing in everyday.

I also am a daily weigher...but i have learned there are patterns to my weight. Not drinking enough and i will weigh more..drinking softdrink even diet and i weigh more. Not to mention TOM and ovulating times..i can go up 4-6lbs during them. I dont let the daily changes bother me..as long as i have been on plan. I record my weight once a week on sat morning...also I never weigh after eating anything..

I've been weighing every day for a while now and I see the same fluctuations. I always weigh in the morning in my underwear. I had fajitas at a mexican restaurant last night so I knew my weight would be up this morning from the salt. Sure enough I was up two pounds from yesterday. It will go away by tomorrow. I can tell it's water weight by the way my rings fit, my fingers are swollen. After you see the pattern of weight fluctuating up and down it won't bother you so much. I look at the overall downward trend that I see when I look back a month. If you chart your weight on fitday.com or thedailyplate.com you can watch the change over time. That really helps me.

Are those all first thing-in-the-morning after-peeing but-not-eating/drinking-anything weights?
|
I ALWAYS weigh first thing in the morning, after I've used the bathroom before I even have a sip of my coffee and my weight will still flucuate a lbs or so depending on what kind of a day I had the day before. I think it's normal

I weigh every day but I only record my weight on Thursdays. Like most of the others, I weigh in the morning, after using the potty and before eating or drinking. I have noticed salt is a big one for me too. If I have salty foods the day before, typically dinner, then the scale goes up the next day.
It's normal so please don't give up! Extasee58865 has a good point, if it affects your mood and how you feel about your day then weighing in once a week might be a better option for you. In any case hang in there! |
Julie - those are "first thing-in-the-morning after-peeing but-not-eating/drinking-anything weights". I even have a ritual where I weigh myself on the digital scale 3 times, and it will fluctuate up or down by a half-pound, and I take "2 out of 3" as my weight for the day.
H8Cake - Thanks for the tip on the salt - Sunday was a very salty food day, so that might have contributed to Monday's high. Weighing just once a week might be better for my spirits. Although I'm a bit nervous that if I knew I wasn't "accountable" for a weigh-in until 5 or 6 days away, that I might go a bit crazy with the junk food! |
I'm a daily weigher too, been doing it for years ;). Learning this early on has saved me much mayhem. Those scale dances don't even affect me anymore. There normal. :)
