Birthday help please

  • My birthday is coming up later this month, and traditionally my kids make me a cake (from a box). It is kind of a big deal. But I do not want to eat cake. What can I have the kids make for me, that is similar to a birthday cake that we can put candles into for me to blow out, that is healthier than a CAKE?

    All ideas welcome!!
  • Angel Food Cake! Its great with fruit salad.

    Or, I've heard that if you take a can of diet coke and the boxed cake mix, mix them together and bake that it tastes really good. Its also low calorie. You can have them put FF Cool Whip on it instead of icing.
  • Trifle..put mixed fresh fruit in a bowl, make jelly and pour over, allow to set. Pour a layer of lf custard on top, allowed to set. yum!
  • Possibly a sugarless carrot cake? http://foodgeeks.com/recipes/recipe/...granular.phtml Make it with "white whole wheat flour" for extra nutrition. Looks reasonably low-fat as well, with just 1/4 cup of oil in it.
  • Oh I would definitely second the angelfood cake with fresh berries!

    But, I also think it's a good "lesson" to your kids that birthday celebrations don't HAVE to have cake. I'm not trying to be an ogre, there's nothing "wrong" with cake for a birthday, but a different perspective/experience might be interesting.

    What about one of those fabulous fruit arrangements? You could order one, or if you bought some of the shapers (melon ballers and things) maybe you could make one together? Or even something really simple - put different fruits on skewers (melon, pineapple, berries), have yogurt/caramel to dip them in or something? Not sure how to work the candles in!

  • I think the kids could have a great time cutting up fruit and creating a special fruit salad for you. They could use melon baller, cookie cutters and such to make special shapes.

    I am definately leaning towards something with lots of fruit.

    The cake isn't all that important to us as much as the blowing-out-candles is. It's a big deal to the kids. I could probably stick candles in a cantaloupe and be ok. LOL! Hmmm.....
  • We just made one of the 'fruit' celebrations for a 5year old with severe food allergies... We had so much fun... we did have to back track a little during the process though to 'treat' the pieces of fruit with lemon juice etc, to keep from turning brown etc. And really could have used some extra pieces 'for practice'... We also learned we needed to cut the pieces so they are 'fat' and hold well on the skewers... Most importantly we learned we needed to finish the process as close to the celebration as possible.... or have 'room' in the frig for it....... we had no room in frig as it was full of other party stuff...
    It was a BIG hit with all...........

    Maybe a chocolate pudding pie? You just put sugar free pudding into a pre-made graham cracker crust with a dollop of fat free whipped cream on top. It would be simple enough for little ones to tackle. If it goes back into the fridge for the pudding to get really firm the candles may even stay in!

    Also, maybe just a store bought pound cake topped with some fat free whipped cream and some strawberries on top.

    Whatever you end up with I hope your day will be lovely!
  • I just celebrated my 50th birthday and was very worried about the cake and all the other party food/drink but found it was no big deal. I didn't lose weight that weekend but didn't gain either. Instead of not eating/drinking, I just walked outdoors for double the amount I usually did and then ate a very tiny sliver of cake (dark chocolate and Bailey's custom ordered for me by DH) and ate everything else in moderation and even had a drink (or two).
    I was worried about falling off the wagon, but found I didn't go much over my calorie allotment, thanks to the extra exercise.
    So just do a little extra exercise, be sparing with the cake portion and enjoy your day!!

  • Perfect answer! http://vitalicious.com/vita_DD_CS_cake.html I LOVE this stuff! They sell a muffin mix on there that you can make to make the cake! Top with some free cool whip and I'm telling you- it is SOOOOO good!
  • Fruit parfaits are fun too! Letting the kids fix all the glasses with cool whip, and fruit, then add some granola and if you're a yogurt fan- you can get plain yogurt and mix berries into it for the middle layer- so fruit, berry yogurt, fruit, berry yogurt lol and then fill the two inch with the light cool whip and set in the freezer just before the celebration

    Yeah I wouldn't be *as* worried about the cake except one of my kids just had a birthday and I had a piece of cake and it sort of set me off, I gained a couple pounds eating other non-good stuff too and I am trying to get those pounds back off. All the ideas are wonderful, I am going to save them all for next year too
