Default New Motivation: Disney World plus a question

Yeah.. my Mother is treating myself, kids and my sisters and their kids to Disney world in late August!

Talk about motivation to lose some weight!

Have any of you been lately?
I'm 5'0" and am 240 lbs. (I wear a size 24). my sister is 5'5" and about 350lbs

How much trouble are we going to have with rides?

Any other advice?

I went to Disney at 250ish, and am 5'2" - I was able to fit onto all the rides. Your sister will have more troubles than you will.

There are quite a few rides that you will fit on. The ones that will be troublesome are the ones that have a seat with a bar that goes does over your lap. Like the coasters ,and the Haunted Mansion (although if you sit way over to the side, this one is fine.).

The worst part is the stupid turnstiles. I hated having to swing sideways and squish my butt through them. If you need to, you can ask to be escorted to the handicap entrance.

You need to check out this site for plus sizers and WDW http://allearsnet.com/tp/ridsiz.htm

We are going to plan a trip to Disney for when I hit goal. We love to go there, and even honeymooned there!

Thanks so much Lori! I figure if I could lose 25 lbs in 4 months - doable... that might help me out a lot while there!

Hey Dana, that's such a great present! Does your mom need another daughter?

Seriously though, up until just over a year ago I was living about an hour from Orlando, so I spent a lot of time at Disney World. I was 5'0" and 245 at the time, and I could fit on all the rides. The only one I had some issues with was Space Mountain. The turnstiles to get into the ride are seriously tight, and I had a tough time. Then you have to squish into the car and getting in and out of that thing (you sit on the floor of the car) was less than graceful. I fit, but it wasn't very comfortable.

I think your sister will have issues with some of the older rides, but honestly, Disney tends to cater to Americans' expanding waistlines, so chances are she'll be fine on the newer stuff especially. My favorite is the safari at Disney's Animal Kingdom and that's just an open bench seat in a truck, so you'll have no worries there at all.

Have fun, and try not to worry too much about it. You're all going to have an awesome time.

I haven't had problems with rides since being under 300.

I went to Disneyland around 260 and had no problems with any of the rides.

Your sister may have problems with some rides, mostly the older rides. I do remember going to Disneyland around 350 and getting on rides but mostly the newer ones.

Dana-

I was last at Disney in Augustof 2006. At that time I was 5'6" and about 260. I fit in every ride except the Tea Cups were a little restrictive. i warn you though Orlando in August is EXTREMELY hot and HUMID!! Fortunately many of the attractions are indoors where it is air conditioned and WDW does a good job providing shade and misters to help keep you cool in long lines.

I would say start working on building up some endurance in the walking department. Leave the cutesie shoes at home, get some comfortable well fitting walking shoes. I would recomend some body glide too. Every one of us had chaffing issues on our thighs, even my skinny minnie daughter.

BE SURE to check out "Soarin' over California" at EPCOT Center. I love going to WDW!! Have fun!!!! I am envious!!

Dana, how exciting! Which park(s) are you going to? Where are you staying? I've been to Disney at many weights, but my highest was at 264 pounds and size 26 and I had no problems. I agree with Kate, it is gonna be hot and muggy in August. If you're staying at one of the Disney resorts, I recommend hitting the park early...going back to the resort for an afternoon siesta in the pool...then back to the park for more rides and to enjoy any parades/fireworks/shows. You're gonna have a blast! I'm so excited for you.

It looks like you have gotten a lot of good response as far as the rides go. I was just there last month so if you have any other questions I would be happy to answer. I am a DISNEY NUT!!!

you can also go to wdwinfo.com there is a lot of info about Disney on there!!

you guys have me so excited now!

Rhonda, we are staying at the all star movies resort. It seems like it's really marketed for kids (mine are 8 and 3) We are going to all 4 parks - going to skip the water parks.

Dana, HOW WONDERFUL!!!!

I've never been to DW, but we went to Disneyland in September..and I had the same fears! I was 250-ish at the time and had no problems on any ride whatsoever. I did get some insanely sore feet though!!

We're the same height...so I can pretty much assure you that you'll be JUST fine, even if you went today

I'm so jealous! It's only been 7 months, and I am absolutely dying to go back already....I love it so much!

You'll have a blast!

This is going to sound like SUCH a dumb question, but has anyone gone to Disney alone? I've never been there and I'd love to go, but oddly enough everyone I know (that I would want to spend a day or more with, anyway) hates amusement parks! I live in the Tampa Bay area, which isn't far. I know it's a family-oriented place, but has anyone had any experience solo there?

I want to go!!! I have never been to Disneyworld before. I have been to Disneyland a few times! Take lots of pics so we can see!!!

Chrysalis - I don't think it would too weird for you to go alone. When I go with my family, we usually end up splitting up to go on rides. It might be more fun alone because you will be able to do what YOU want. Maybe kind of lonely waiting in the long lines. I say make a friend go with you!

I've never been alone, but I wouldn't feel out of place if I did. My favorite park is Epcot because -- and this is a really frivilous reason -- I love the dishes in the Japanese shop in the Worlds section. I have spent a lot of money there, and I wouldn't have any issue whatsoever with going there by myself.

The main benefit of going solo is that usually, especially when it's really busy, the popular rides will have a single rider line. So you can just zip through and they use you to fill in seats left by odd-sized groups. A lot of teenagers go together and split up just to ride faster, but I've also seen people at the parks by themselves. There's no reason not to enjoy it just because your friends are lame.

What fun! I went at my high weight (5'9" 346 lbs) and I did have trouble with Space Mountain. The bar wouldn't go down over my stomach. Haunted Mansion was tight but doable. The teacups were tight but doable. Nothing else was a problem.

I don't think you'll have any problems, but your sister may have a few. Hopefully she will try it all and not worry about it. I was quite pleased actually that I fit on as many rides as I did.
