sticking to a little bit is hard, even when you have "allowed" treats. I amazed myself the other day by having a smart one brownie sundae (200cals) -- I ate about half of it and realized I was stuffed. Much to my surprise, I just put it in a plastic container and stuck it back in the freezer. The old me would have said, "What the heck?" and finished it. Not to mention, I've been known to gobble 2 of the Cocoa Mia 100 calorie chocolate bars.

SO, my point is that it can be difficult to teach yourself to limit your sweets, EVEN when you allow yourself to eat them... even more so when they pop up unplanned, and the fact that you were able to limit yourself to a small piece is not a defeat, per say, but pretty darn close to a victory. Sure, you ate off plan, but like everyone else is saying, that WILL happen. But, you know, people don't gain 100 lbs by eating one slice of cheesecake ;).

Enjoy your salad at the dinner tomorrow :)

Everyone's pretty much covered it, and done so with wisdom and grace. The only thing I will add is this - Don't fool yourself into thinking that your dietary choices matter much to the person sitting next to you. I remember when I first started. I had an event coming up where root beer floats would be served. I agonized over what I would say. "I can't eat those foods." "My doctor has advised against it." Even the insane "I don't really care for ice cream." In the end, all I said was, "No thank you." When it came up once in casual conversation, I said, "I'm trying to limit those foods." That was it. So - ordering the chef salad sounds like a great plan, if you're sure your friend is right about being able to get it. Otherwise, pack a lunch of delicious food so that you don't feel deprived. And unfortunately, there is a good chance that your daughter won't be one of the few fortunate people who never have to worry about weight. Showing her ways to negotiate difficult situations will only benefit her.

And congratulations on making the best food choices that you could. You're proving that you've got the ability to make this work!

I talked about the lunch today in NSV thread...but wanted to say here that there were quite a few people that brought in McDonalds to their kids today..and I was thinking I'd rather her eat the turkey than that junk! But then my daughter informed me she promised her friend she would sit with her...this is a friend that is very overweight, like 3X the size of the others in her kindergarten class, due to a medical problem...when we got to the table the girl's mom had saved us seats, and I realized she had brought Subway in for her daughter. I told her that was such a great idea, and she said she was nervouse everyone would look at them funny! But there I was, telling her it was awesome. Her daughter cannot eat the school lunches so she goes with something healthier, and I learned from her that I can do what I have to do for my own health..and the person next to me just might be jealous that I had the idea to do that!
