Nighttime Snacks

I need some ideas for a healthy night time snack. I have been feeling truly hungry around 8pm and I don't go to bed for several more hours. I try drinking water or tea, but my stomach is growling. I think I need a protein snack, but don't want a lot of calories. Ideas?

you could cook up an egg white, only about 30 calories and lots of protein! You can have it hard boiled or fry it (with some no fat spray) and top with salsa, or put it on a slice of whole grain bread.

Cottage cheese has a good amount of protein in it too. I like mine with a few fresh berries. Get the low fat and it's also low calorie

You could also have some peanut butter with celery or a handful of nuts but those are a little higher in calories.

I usually have low fat yogurt with a tablespoon of walnuts.

Popcorn sprinkled with any of your favorite seasonings is a good choice as well. I use cinnamon and Splenda on top of mine.

Kashi granola bars are very yummy.

It depends on how many calories you have to "spend". A few months ago, I started getting munched again in the evenings and had to switch up my food scheduele. I now actually save myself quite a few calories for the evening.

-I love a Danon Fit and Free 60 calorie yogurt, which I semi freeze with 1/4 cup of Fiber One cereal. Very satisfying.
-Sometimes I'll have a gigantic salad with romaine hearts, cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers and a 3 oz can of tuna in water.
-An apple and 10 pistachio nuts
-Cucmber salad
-1/4 oatmeal (before cooking) and an egg white omlette

Lately, I am addicted to half a cup of Fage 0% Greek Yogurt with some slivered almonds and a drizzle of agave nectar. for my bedtime snack. I look forward to it all day.

I'm afraid that snackage is the one place I'm still a bit of an alcoholic LOL so I have to just not do it. I have a little something in the afternoon if I'm hungry, otherwise I have a nice supper and then tidy up the house and kitchen, get all my stuff done that i need to, and make a nice hot cup of tea and have a few ginger cookies (awesome organic cookies, 3 big ones for 100 cals! ) for my dessert at about 7:30 or 8:00 p.m. and then the kitchen is closed for the night!

I know you can put a handful of something aside for 100 cals or have some popcorn or fruit or yogurt but at night time I just can't control myself - and I'd end up having 5 snacks LOL, so it's easier for me NOT to snack at all at night :( maybe some day but not today :)

I currently have the opposite problem. Usually in the evening, I don't want to eat anything and have to force myself to eat a little dinner.

Although before when I felt like eating something at night, I'd either have a small piece of dark chocolate or a piece of fruit. A smoothie might also be a good option.

Thanks for the great ideas! I want to "spend" only 100 calories or less on this snack. And I get heartburn if I eat some things at night. I had a string cheese yesterdat and that was pretty good. Nuts are a good idea too... will try various things, thanks!

I found a 42-pack box of the 100 calorie bags of 94% fat free popcorn at CostCo. I put tobasco sauce or seasoning salt or garlic powder on it. There ends up being a lot of popcorn for few calories.

The mini bags of microwave popcorn are really good. They are like 100 calories.... and if you drink water or a diet soda with it, then it fills you up enough to satisfy until you can go to bed.... that is what I do sometimes.... I think it reallly helps

As for me while I was losing weight and got hungry at night, I didn't eat anything, I drank a glass of water instead. I truly remember every time I was hungry in the evenings, and I didn't give in to those cravings their always seemed to be a loss on the scale the next morning for me... Sounds strange but I think hunger at night = weightloss the next morning. For me anyways...

My faves under 100 calories
  • Wasa with lowfat cheddar cheese or hummus
  • string cheese (lowfat - it "peels" better)
  • nuts with popcorn
  • dry cereal mixed with yogurt
  • feta cheese, portabella mushrooms, and tomato sauce on half of a flat bread (flatout brand) or light multigrain english muffin (mini pizza)
