Pedometer???????

  • Ok. So I want to get a pedometer so I can try to get 10,000 steps a day. So I went to Dicks Sporting Goods website and they have 4 pages of pedometers. How am I supposd to pick which one I want. All I want is a simple pedometer that counts my step and maybe how many calories Im burning. How do I know if the one that I am picking is good quality without spending $5000. LOL
Can anyone help me. Maybe what kind you have or how to know if what Im buying is what I really want and need. Thanks
  • I got mine at Walmart for like $10. It seems to work well. Definately nothing wonderful, but it works.
  • I would just go for a simple model. My good friend is constantly dropping hers in the potty or having hers fly off her waitband onto the ground, so she swears by cheap and cheerful. With that kind of abuse, you may need to buy another soon.
  • I agree that you should get a simple, inexpensive one that attaches to your belt or waistband.
  • Omron makes good ones, for about 20 dollars and up. A little higher than the cheap ones, but I think it is more reliable.
  • My hubby got mine at Walmart as well, he paid five bux for it. It is cheap, which was the point since I managed to loose things as big as a semi before. (No it wasn't stolen I just couldn't remember where I parked the darn thing). It works and now that I remember I have it, I am gonna go find it and start using it agian.
  • hi,
I got one at Target in clearance for $4. I don't use it all the time, but know that 10,000 is alot. it took me 45 minutes of walking plus walking around the house all day to get it done.

  • I bought one at 5 below for $5. But it is really cheap and every time I set it for how big my steps are, then it will shut itself off and reset itself. stupid thing. so now i want to get a better one. I know 10000 is alot. im not going to start there. someone told me that i should just use it for a week without doing anything different than normal and average how many steps i do a day and then add 500 each week til i get to 10000
  • I have an omron pedometer and really like it. You don't need to clip it to you but can put it in a pocket or purse! It is about $20, but I figured 1 reliable pedometer that wouldn't break trumped cheaper ones that might. (Isn't justification wonderful!)

Anyway, I've had it for... a year and a half I think. Mine tracks steps, miles, i think calories (though I don't use that and have no idea if it's accurate) and 'aerobic steps' -- once you've been moving for at least 10 minutes without stops (though if you had to tie your shoes quickly it would keep going)...

I thought one had to wear a pedometer near the waist/hip(clipped on to waist of pants/belt) for an accurate count?
  • I too, have the Omron pedometer. ($20 at walmart) it is VERY accurate. I think you get what you pay for in that department. The inexpensive ones are ok, but after using several of them and getting aggravated, I opted for the Omron and I will never own another kind. It is worth the money, IMO. Yep, you can just stick it in your pocket and it keeps count just fine.
  • Funny you should ask - I just order the pedometer my friend has.

Like Heather's you can put in a pocket or purse and it also has a USB connection so the geek in me can track my progress!
  • Cool Sandi!! I didn't even know they had one like that! You're gonna love that gadget, I am sure. Let us know how you like it!
  • Got it yesterday and all I can say is wow!

It has the time on it and then you set it up and enter in your weight...your stride. It calculates step...miles...and calories burned. Very cool!

It also comes with a security strap that clips very tightly so you are less likely to lose it.

I haven't installed the software yet and I'll be Out of town for the weekend, so hopefully early next week I can see what the software is like.
  • Yep - the one I have is the one you punch in all those numbers too. I LOVE it. Can't wait to hear about the software part of it!

DO NOT put it in the washing machine & dryer though. You'll have to buy a new one if you do. (the bad part of being able to just stick it in your pocket, is that you may forget you put it there!)
