Any 100+chicks ever take ballroom dance lessons?

There's a studio starting a 6 week program in a couple of weeks. Here's the description:

Get introduced to the basics of Latin and Ballroom dancing, enjoy a low impact moderate cardio workout and learn some moves that you can also use in nightclubs or other social settings with or without a partner!

I think I can do this! I will probably be partnerless (my boyfriend isn't really interested in this). It sounds like a great workout while learning some dance moves.

I admit, I'm a bit nervous about doing this at my size. I'm fairly coordinated, but I'm wondering if I will be too self conscious about being the biggest one in the room?

Anyone else here ever take dance lessons as a big girl?

Well, not yet, but there are a number of places in my area that do this on a regular basis. I want to go with a parther though, so i'm trying to talk a couple people I know into going with me. I don't think I would have enough guts right now to go alone.

Let us know how it goes!

I think Goddess Jessica might have. I'll let her tell us for sure.

My mom did! They did every type of dancing that I can think of, my mom went with her bf. She had no huge problems, and she's a larger gal. I don't know her weight though, I DO know her size since I buy most of her clothes for her - so like a size 22-24. Go do it! And have LOTS of fun!!

Your mom and I wear the same size (in tops, anyway!)

I think I WILL do this! It does look like fun! :)

I did! I did salsa classes when I was around 330lbs! It is something of an advantage in latin dancing anyway to have things to shake!!! Dancing is such fun and I've put off going for more lessons because of my size too but your post has reminded me of how great it is. Hope you go and along and just see what it's like - if it's awful then you don't have to go back :-)

Do it! I took a ballet class a couple years ago, I was at least as big as I am now, it rocked! I think there is something about being larger that makes women more sensual... just a thought.

Tell us how it goes!

My mom did it, too--my parents both took dance lessons for almost a year. I'm not sure exactly what weight or size my mom is, but I think she's about a 22 (she's let me borrow sweatshirts and stuff before when I went to their house and forgot mine, so she's not too much smaller than me). They really loved it, but the expense became to great because they were going about twice a week and are now preparing to move, so money's gotten a bit tighter. Even my dad enjoyed it, though, and is SO not a dancing type :dizzy:

I love dancing. I don't have the option of ballroom dancing in my area. However, our local country bar does country dance lessons...and the instructors have become like a second set of parents to me! :) It doesn't matter what your size is, if you love music and love dancing, just go do it! You will lose weight by dancing and it is sooooooo much fun!

Read an article in a newspaper here over the weekend which was on a ballet company that recruits women who are on average 20 stone (280lbs). They are on tour in the UK at the moment and I might have to check them out. However, the article (written by a slim woman) was sneering and lots of fat references every other sentence - it was like 'how funny that fat people think they can dance'. I think that's the kind of voice I hear in my head that kept me from doing anything - like running, dancing, sports in general - for years. What a shame! But go girls - I'm proud of them!

I admire any plus woman who puts herself out there like that! As soon as I have money, add me to the dancers list! I've always wanted to learn how to ballroomdance.
