Foods You Can Eat on the Atkins Diet

The Atkins Diet has yielded some great weight loss results for many people. But, you must carefully follow the diet to obtain great results. There are select foods that are recommended to turn your body into a fat burning furnace. These foods are deficient in carbohydrates.

The Atkins Diet urges its followers to avoid excessive intake of carbohydrates in all forms. When the human body does not have access to energy in the form of carbohydrates, it will begin using ketones as fuel. Ketones are created by the liver using fat in the form of fatty acids. Thus, this fat-burning mode is known as ketosis. The Atkins Diet wants a person to be in a perpetual state of ketosis and enjoy all the weight loss that will inevitably result.

The following foods are sure to be enjoyed while adhering to the Atkins Diet.

Red Meat

According to Atkins weight loss plan, red meat is a great choice. It is deficient in carbs and is loaded with protein. All but only the most die-hard of vegetarians find it hard to resist the temptation of a well-seasoned, perfectly cooked, juicy slab of steak. But even proponents of the Atkins Diet will tell you to be mindful of your intake of red meat, because it has its share of fat. It doesn’t make a lot of sense to put your body in fat burning mode only to provide it with much more fat to burn. Take care not to overdue it by keeping portions reasonable.

The Atkins Diet aside, eggs are really a food wonder. They are loaded with protein, vitamin A, riboflavin, folate, choline, calcium, iron, vitamin b6 and b12 and vitamin D. They are also extremely versatile because not only can they be prepared in a variety of ways, they can also be added to mixtures for other preparations to change their flavor and consistency. They contain no carbs and, to top it all off, they are relatively inexpensive.

Those who have a diet that consists of eating a lot of fish tend to have lower incidences of heart disease and depression. This is a result of all of the vitamins and nutrients obtained from fish, such as omega-3 fatty acids. Fish, much like red meat, is also deficient in carbs. But, unlike red meat, it’s not high in saturated fat. Limit your fish consumption to 3 days a week to avoid ingesting high levels of mercury.

Cheese is considered a low carb food that can be enjoyed by those on the Atkins Diet. The diet recommends limiting your intake of cheese, as it does contain a small amount of carbohydrates and a moderately large amount of fat.

Under the Atkins Diet, you can enjoy a wide variety of vegetables. Green vegetables are especially recommended. Vegetables in general contain very few carbohydrates and almost no fat. They also usually contain lots of vitamins and minerals, as well as dietary fiber. Most diets recommend higher vegetable consumption, and the Atkins Diet is no different. Please note that there are certain starchy vegetables that can’t be consumed on this diet, and others are off limits during the beginning phase.

Incorporate the above foods into your nutrition plan while on the Atkins Diet, and you should be on your way to shedding those unwanted pounds.
