Flexibility and Overall Fitness

An overall fitness program should include training for cardiovascular health, resistance training and flexibility training. Cardiovascular program and resistance training are important in losing weight and gaining strength. Flexibility is important, as it relaxes tight muslces which can cause pain during exercises. Being flexible greatly reduces injury risk to the muscles, and promotes ease of movement during each exercises. Overall fitness also incorporates the practice of a healthy lifestyle, which can be measured by taking annual measurements of blood chemistries and bone density.

How to Become More Flexible

Becoming more flexible takes discipline. It is not a difficult training, but it is not easy at the same time. It can be done without any equipments and with little supervision. But, keep in mind to do it gradually and regularly, and to stop when you reach your limit, that is, when pain is felt. The best method to become flexible is by stretching. Start stretching early in the morning three times a week. Do warm-up exercises for 5 to 10 minutes first, then do stretching exercises for 20 to 30 minutes. As you do the stretching, hold it for 20 to 30 seconds, then repeat many times. Do this regularly to increase flexibilty.

The body can truly feel the benefits of flexibility exercises. These stretching exercises have been found to promote relaxation and relieve daily stress. Aside from that, it improves blood flow to the muscles, making them perform better not only during the program, but in performing daily life activities as well.
