Fitness Training: How To Exercise When You've Hit The Wall

It happens to the best of us.  You are exercising, you’re on a plan that works for you, and then you hit the wall during your fitness training exercise. The wall can be different for each person. Maybe it is a plateau in your weight loss goals, or maybe it is just the sheer boredom of the routine, and you don’t want to go back. So what do you do when you hit that wall in your fitness training exercise? When you have hit the wall, it is important to know what you need to do to get past it (and continue on).

Acknowledge the Wall

It is important to understand when you have hit the wall; it makes it easier to overcome it and get back to your health and fitness routine. Did you the hit the wall because you over exercised? Did you hit the wall because you injured yourself and don’t know how to get back to it? Knowing the answers to these questions will help you get back on board.

If you have injured yourself, it is a good idea to speak with your doctor about the type of exercises you can do to try and stay in shape (without reinjuring yourself). If you hit the wall because of overexercise, then you need to find some new ways to get your fitness routine back on track (that are different from what you were doing). You could try incorporating new things, like an exercise ball, or get out of the gym and do some field training. Think about your options and pick a new one.

Start Weight Training

After you’ve acknowledged the wall and know why you hit it in the first place, it is important to make a new plan. If you hit the wall due to injury, one of the best things you can do (to get started) is weight training.  Weight training is a wonderful way to improve your fitness and strengthen yourself to protect against future injury. 

If you have hit the wall due to overexercise, then weight training is great because it helps you get started again in a slow and deliberate way.

Find a New Routine You Can Stick To

Finding a new routine that you think you can stick with is important after you have hit the wall. It isn’t healthy to just stop all together and not exercise again. If your routine pre-wall included the gym, then maybe it is time to try some home fitness ideas. Using a workout DVD in the comfort of you home may do the trick. You could also purchase some fitness equipment that might motivate you to workout at home.

When getting back to your workout routine, it is important that you take the time to find what can work for you long term.  If you hit the wall due to over exercise or injury, you need to find something new to do (that won’t aggravate the injury or cause you to get bored down the road). Easy and moderate exercise is better than no exercise; keep that in mind as you are working to come back. And whatever you do, don’t quit!
