Fitness Training Courses: What to Look For

When you go to buy a car or home, you don’t just pick one off a sheet of paper and hope that it’s what you need, and the same goes when you are trying to find fitness training courses. There are many things to consider when looking for a fitness course, and while you might like a course at one gym or club, you might not like the same class taught by someone else. Here are a few things to consider while you look.


Think about your daily routine. What time of day are you the most active and awake?  Do your kids go to school or nap at certain times?  These are things you’ll probably want to look at first, because even if you absolutely love that kickboxing class, you’re not going to go if you can’t find a baby sitter.  There are usually classes to accommodate every schedule, from very early morning to Saturday afternoon.

Course Type

Your gym or fitness center might offer a wide variety of classes, or maybe just a few, regardless, you will probably find something you like.  After you decide what time of day is best, you can look and see what courses are offered. After you narrow it down, think about what you want to get out of the course. If you are working on getting in shape, try a cardio class, aerobics, or step. If you want to strengthen or sculpt your muscles, try a conditioning or toning class. If you want to find exercise that promotes strength and balance, opt for yoga or Pilates. Whatever your choice, make sure the class works for you, and by all means, don’t go if it’s not what you want. If you’re sore after your body sculpting class, don’t use it as an excuse to quit. If you like the instructor and you feel comfortable in the class, keep at it.


Sometimes it’s all about the instructor. If you don’t mesh well with the instructor and their style, the whole class is going to be miserable for you. For example, if your aerobics instructor is a former dancer, but you don’t feel comfortable with all the rhythmic dance moves she throws in, opt for another class. You have to put your mind and body into what you’re doing to get the results you are looking for.


Most classes are about an hour long, but occasionally they are shorter or longer in length. If you are trying to squeeze in a class during your lunch break, pick a class with a shorter time period and higher intensity. If you are looking for a something to end your day, you might try a longer yoga class.

It’s up to you to make a fitness course work for you. These courses are not only an effective weight loss tool, but they can also be a fun and social way to get in your exercise.
