Find a Flattering Haircut for your Face Shape

When choosing a haircut, you should always consider which cuts and styles will look most flattering to your face shape. Face shapes can be oval, round, heart shaped, rectangular, triangular and square. The wrong haircut can make your features look distorted, but the right haircut can flatter your face by accentuating the best features and drawing attention away from the less attractive ones. Here’s how to find the best haircut to flatter your face shape.

Hairstyles for Round Faces

If you have a round face, consider a medium length or long style. Layers look good on round faces, but avoid bangs; ideally, your hair should hang down to below your chin, to add length to your face. Part your hair on one side to hide a high or wide forehead. Add layers at the crown of the head, but keep the hair thin around your cheekbones.

If you have a round face and would like a short style, choose one that tapers down below the chin. A style that ends at the cheekbones will only emphasize the roundness of your face.

Hairstyles for Oval Faces

If you have an oval shaped face, you can wear almost any hairstyle you please, but avoid bangs or hairstyles that hang over and hide the face. Choose cuts and styles that accentuate the features you like most.

Hairstyles for Heart Shaped Faces

If you have a heart shaped face, choose a style that’s at least chin length. Keep the hair thin around the forehead; choose a cut that adds fullness around the chin and cheekbones. If you have a heart shaped face, wear your hair swept back to accentuate your cheekbones.

Hairstyles for Triangular Faces

If your jaw is wider than your forehead, you have a triangular face shape. Choose haircuts that add fullness and layers at the crown and around the forehead, but that thin out as they near the jawline and chin. This will de-emphasize the narrowness of your forehead.

Hairstyles for Rectangular Faces

Choose a short or medium length haircut to make a long, narrow face look plump and round. Haircuts that end at the cheekbones will add width to a rectangular face. Long, wispy bangs are a good idea if you’ve got a rectangular face shape.

Hairstyles for Square Face Shapes

If you have a wide forehead and a wide, strong and clearly defined jaw, you have a square face shape. Make your square face look longer by choosing a cut that adds layers and fullness to the crown. Part your hair to one side to hide your square face shape. Long, wispy bangs make your face look rounder and softer and can help to draw attention away from your high, wide forehead, and avoid straight styles in favor of waves and curls that make the lines of your face look softer. Choose short or medium length styles that end either above or below the jawline. Cuts that end at the jawline will emphasize its square shape.
