During pregnancy, a common concern among expectant mothers is how much water to drink a day. Playing a vital role in a healthy pregnancy, water intake must be high and consistent throughout your entire pregnancy both for your health and the baby. Keeping the body hydrated is an essential step in maintaining a healthy pregnancy, and care should be taken to make sure you are getting enough throughout the entire course of your pregnancy.

How Much Water is Enough?

During pregnancy, you should aim for at least 6 to 8 glasses of water a day, totaling 48 to 64 fluid ounces. Additionally, you should add an 8 ounce glass for every hour of light activity to ensure that you stay well hydrated.

Juice can be calculated into your fluid intake, but carries with it much higher calorie levels, so try to keep your juice intake minimal. Both coffee and tea can also be factored into your fluid intake. Experts do advise to limit your caffeine intake.

What Role Does Water Play?

Water serves as your body’s transportation system. During pregnancy, it works to carry nutrients in your blood to your baby. It also works to prevent a common ailment during pregnancy – bladder infections. By drinking a lot of water, you will keep your urine diluted and thereby reduce the risk of infection.

During pregnancy, the more water you drink, the less your body will retain. Additionally, it helps to both ease and prevent the common pregnancy problems of hemorrhoids and constipation. Water helps keep the body hydrated, which is especially important during pregnancy. In the third trimester, dehydration can trigger preterm labor, so it is especially important in the last 3 months of pregnancy to remain hydrated daily.

Lemon, lime or cucumber all add a nice flavor to water and can be steeped in a pitcher of water or inserted into your glass just prior to drinking.
