Although life changing events can shape your future, what you do in your 20s influences these things. Dieting in your 20s sets the stage for the rest of your life as well. The fast track years of weight loss begin in your 20s.


Your metabolism is faster and better in your 20s. It seems that everything you eat just melts off. As you get into your 30s, this fast metabolism slows down. While you’re still a 20-something, make sure to eat sensible meals. Any weight you gain may be harder to lose later on.

Working Out

Working out is easier on you now than in your later years. You have more energy to hit the gym and work out for longer periods of time. This amazing energy increases your ability to lose weight and keep it off. Incorporate weight training, Pilates and cardiovascular exercises into your workout plan. You’ll find entering into your 30s a lot easier on you.

Eating Healthy

Dieting in your 20s requires eating healthy and wholesome foods. Although your metabolism is fast, you need to eat fruits, vegetables and lean protein to maintain a strong body. Eat foods that have lots of vitamins and minerals. Good nutritional choices prepare you for the future.

Portion Control

It’s easy to eat more than you need when you’re in your 20s. However, portion control trains you to eat right years from now. Even if you eat nutritious foods, you should avoid overeating. Overeating at the dinner table can lead to weight gain.

Fad Dieting

With so many fad diets on the market, you may find some of them enticing. Stay away from diets that limit your nutrition. These diets may seem like quick and easy ways to lose weight, but they’re very unhealthy for you in the long run. You need vitamins and minerals for every organ in your body. Plans like all-protein and no-carb diets seem ideal, but they take away the nutrients of other foods. You need healthy servings of every food group in your diet, with the exception of fats and sweets.

Limiting Alcohol

Drinking alcohol affects your dieting. Set limits on how much of this you do. It’s full of empty calories and unhealthy additives. Even low calorie beers are bad for your health. Some alcohols and beers add unwanted pounds that are hard to lose.

Getting Enough Sleep

Sleep affects dieting in your 20s more than you know. When you’re sleep deprived, you tend to slack off on working out and eating. This leads to weight gain and health problems. Try to aim for 8 hours of undisturbed sleep each night. Although college or working late may interfere with this, make every effort to do this.  

Dieting is something everyone tries. It’s easier when you’re in your 20s than later on in your 30s, 40s and 50s. What you do now affects how your health is later.
