nearly a month…?

I’m really not sure how the last month passed me by… it really flew. Part of it was starting a new job a couple weeks ago, which has definitely kept me busy! As soon as I got out of the habit of updating my blog daily, it became more difficult for me to motivate myself to keep posting. Also, I’d noticed myself getting a bit obsessive, and that’s rarely a fun state of mind (not to mention unhealthy).

I have the pictures from SF, and still intend to post them, either today or tomorrow. It was an awesome trip and I can’t wait to visit again soon!! My weight loss stalled, which is probably less than surprising 😉 However, I didn’t gain any weight while I was in San Francisco! I ate at restaurants, I had treats from bakeries, downed some drinks, ate frozen yogurt, and managed to do it all in moderation… I felt pretty proud of that. Walking around the city burned some serious calories; I ended up burning about the same calories each day I was in SF as I usually do in an average day when I work out. Awesome!! That obviously played a role in preventing any weight gain.

workout 3/10/10

38 mins running, moderate pace… i just kind of hate the word “jogging” 😉

Meant to do some resistance work, but my body is thoroughly exhausted from the last few days. This is the sorest I’ve been in years!! It’s, well, actually quite painful. Maybe I’m really onto something 😀 I’ll just keep pressing on, and will be pounding the pavement tomorrow morning, bright and early. Wish me luck and NO injuries! I’m heading to the SF Bay Area to see my best friend this weekend, and to catch up with a friend I haven’t seen since high school (5 years, wow has time flown by), so I feel like I should be hitting it as hard as possible with my exercise in preparation for eating at restaurants while I’m in the Bay. I’m so excited!! I’ll be taking plenty of pictures to post here, so stay tuned…

fitness update 3/9/10

Weight: 120.0 on NEW scale (=118.0 lbs on old scale) (+0.5 lb from last week, -1.5 lb overall from start)

Bust: 34″ (-0 from last week, -1 from start; 32C)

Waist: 26.5″ (-0 from last week, -0.5 from start)

Hips: 36″ (-0 from last week, -0.5 from start)

The numbers might not exactly spell “P-R-O-G-R-E-S-S,” but I feel great, and I know that I’ll ultimately see the downward trend in my weight and measurements as long as I stay focused! Here’s a visual (WARNING, gratuitous pale skin ahead!!):

I see a difference, so I’m pretty happy! When I had my mom take those pictures on 2/9, I sure wasn’t happy to see them, but I’m so glad that I have them now, or I would have no perspective on the impact I’ve managed to make on my body in the last month alone. Oh, and just ignore that I’m hunching my neck in the second picture, trying to get the shot right on my camera’s viewscreen D

Running

Went running (well, jogging) this morning for about 40-45 mins. It felt great… very relaxing somehow, which was somewhat unexpected. I can’t wait to go again!! This is a photo from right when I got back; my cheeks are a little rosy but I’m nowhere near as red in the face as I used to get (think ripe tomato). Overall, I’m so excited to have rediscovered this activity (and the opportunity to listen to my music outside of my car!) I did about 15 minutes of weights after I cooled down a little.

Realistic Expectations

I look at myself in the mirror. I know that I exercise almost every day. I know that I make good food choices and hold myself accountable for every bite I eat. BUT I have this picture in my head of what someone is “supposed” to look like who exercises daily and watches what they eat…. and that person does NOT look like me. This is a pretty classic dieter’s/exerciser’s pitfall – I do the work and make the commitment, but then I get frustrated because I don’t see the results as quickly as I feel like I should. I need to remember that I have only been consistently eating well and exercising for the last three months or so. In the larger scope of things, three months is not that long, especially not when I’m trying to re-establish healthy eating and exercising habits that will last me a lifetime. In the course of my lifetime, will it really matter that it took me a year to lose the weight I wanted to, rather than three months, or will it matter that I kept it off, for GOOD this time?! So I guess I need to exercise that pesky virtue, patience 😀

I’m setting some new goals for myself… goals that don’t have anything to do with weight, or body fat percentages, or waist measurements. I ran cross-country for my last two years of high school, and haven’t run regularly since then, just on-and-off. Each day after school during practice, I’d run four to six miles in 105+ degree heat (cross-country season is perversely scheduled for the hottest time of the year). In my adult life, I’ve never been a fast runner, and even at the peak of the season, I didn’t run faster than about an 8:30-minute-mile. But I think that with a good training program and some serious dedication, I can do better than that. So I’m shooting for a 7:30-minute-mile, and I want to reach that goal by the time that I reach my goal weight. I’m also shooting for the goal of running for a full hour (at a more moderate pace). Wish me luck, I’m starting tomorrow! My iPod is charging up right now 😉

Throughout the day I eat more or less depending on how hungry I am… as I noted before, I seem to automatically adjust myself to around a 700 calorie deficit (I’m still hungry, mind you!!)
