Decaff Coffee vs Regular: Which is Better for You?

Studies have shown that coffee can lower your risk of developing diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, colon cancer, and even prevent cavities. Many coffee drinkers consume this beverage purely for the sake of enjoyment. But does decaf benefit you more greatly than regular coffee when it comes to disease prevention?

During the decaffeination process, over 97% of caffeine is removed from coffee beans. This leaves you with 5 milligrams per 6 ounces, rather than the usual 150 milligrams in a 6 ounce regular cup of java. Sadly, coffee doesn’t grow naturally decaffeinated like some herbal teas that can be found on the market.

The caffeine is extracted from coffee beans using a variant of three different methods: organic chemical solvents (either ethyl acetate or methylene chloride), carbon dioxide, or Swiss Water method. Coffee decaffeinated using ethyl acetate is sometimes described as naturally decaffeinated purely from the fact that the chemical is derived from fruit.

Certain methods of decaffeination preserve flavor better than others, but no single method is preferred. Controversy over the use of methylene chloride arose years ago because the same chemical was removed from hairspray when studies linked cancer related growth in lab rats to the inhalation of the chemicals. However, the FDA approved the chemical for decaffeination use when new studies showed that drinking the chemical had no affect.

Regular Coffee Revealed

Though regular coffee faced harsh scrutiny over the years, studies show that caffeine actually totes great health benefits. Caffeine boosts energy, reduces pain, and prevents certain diseases like Parkinson’s disease, colon cancer, and possibly lowers your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

Other than increased jitteriness or elevated heart rate, caffeine has no harmful side effects to those without caffeine sensitivity issues.

Other Health Benefits of Coffee

Those who have other vices may reap great benefits when drinking coffee regularly. Studies show that those who are heavy drinkers or smoke often have a reduced risk of heart disease and liver damage.

Coffee has also been shown to help manage asthma, reduce headaches, and even prevent the formation of cavities. Caffeine is a natural analgesic, which provides a great pain relieving effect.


The same side effects are risked when consuming either blend: heartburn, irritated stomach ulcers, stimulated nervous system, and a possible brief boost in blood pressure. However, some of the benefits of coffee are directly related to the high amount of caffeine in the bean. Caffeine can stimulate the brain and nervous system to perform actions differently. This increases athleticism indirectly and allows the body to recover from pain more readily.

Clearly, regular coffee isn’t for everyone. If you have known caffeine sensitivity, then drinking decaf will still provide you with great health benefits. Regardless of your preference, you don’t have to feel guilty about this indulgence. In fact, drinking as little as one cup of coffee a day will greatly reduce your risk of certain diseases.
