Common Amino Acid Side Effects Dieters Should Know

While amino acids are becoming well know and oft-discussed in the bodybuilding community, there are some amino acid side effects that you should know about. Just as with any vitamin or supplement, too much of something can have negative effects. With amino acids, as long as you ingest them in moderation and consume healthy amino acids, there really isn’t much of a need to be concerned. Especially when you compare amino acid supplements with other products such as hgh, you realize that amino acids have the obvious advantage of not being a drug, thus they are much healthier.

Side Effects

With that being said, here is a quick list of some of the most common amino acid side effects that can effect you if you don’t follow a proper diet or ingest too many amino acids:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Tension in the muscles (and stress-related tension)
  • Restlessness
  • Rapid Heartbeat
  • Heart Palpitations

The Good News

While these are the most common amino acid side effects, the good news about amino acids is that it is really hard to overdose on them. In many cases, most are harmless and when your body has too much, it just turns it into another essential compound. There are harmful amino acids, such as tyrosine, which are known for causing most of these problems. Stick to healthy protein through meat, or ingest supplements if you have trouble fitting amino acids into your regular diet. If you start to feel any of these side effects, cut down and consult a physician.

There is one important side effect to amino acid supplementation that you left out. Amino acids can cause kidney damage. It is important to drink at a lot of water if taking a lot of amino acids.

I began taking serotonin many years ago to solve a sleep disorder acquired from a bout with meningitis and encephalitis (both at the same time!). It took several years to find a way to get a complete night’s sleep but taking 5-HTP solved the problem and an added benefit was that it also relieved my depression and anxiety.

The one and only caveat from my doctor regarding taking 5-HTP at bedtime was that I must drink at least 8 ounces of water with the amino acide because he said they could “burn” my kidneys. So, please suggest to your readers that they drink at least a large glass of water whenever they take amino acids.

Thanks for your website. It is a great find.

Hi Bobbi. I used 5-htp at night time but had to stop after 6 weeks cause I was getting really bad nightmares. Now I just say my good night prayer and never get
    nightmares since.

I remember the problem with amino acids was balancing them. Why not use meat, eggs, dairy, fish, (legumes and whole grain together) … They all have other nutrients as well, and the natural balance might preclude your doctor having to boost individual amino acids.

HGH — A dangerous drug to increase body mass. Why is it mentioned? Legend has it that Jimi Hendrix overdosed shooting heroin into the veins of his forehead. Don’t take that “supplement” either.

Has anyone ever heard of high doses of amino acid copmlex triggering a hives response. My husband recently started a regimen of high doseage from a bodybuilding formula to combat the fatigue effects of extrememly strenuous physical labor. He has taken them before, but I dont think at this high a dose. He has also increased his ‘B’ intake as well.
