Inflammatory bowel disease  (IBD) is a group of disorders that affect the small and large intestines. Ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease are 2 major types of inflammatory bowel disease that develop in individuals. Most of the diseases that form this group have similar symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea and weight loss among others.

Causes of Inflammatory Bowel Disease

The cause of the disease is inflammation of the intestines due to an overactive immune system wherein the immune system starts attacking various tissues of the digestive tract. It is hypothesized that if you’re fit, you can reduce your chances of developing IBD.

Stop Smoking: Smoking is dangerous to your health and can decrease the fitness of your body. In addition, smokers are more susceptible to IBD. Besides this, when a smoker contracts IBD, the symptoms are more severe and difficult to control than those experienced by a non-smoker.

Decrease Consumption of Alcohol: Your digestive system is adversely affected by consumption of alcohol, thus causing your body to be more susceptible to IBDs such as Crohn’s disease.

Eat Nutritious Food: You should incorporate a lot of fruits and green vegetables in your diet, as a high fiber diet is essential for a healthy colon and small intestine. It helps prevent constipation and improper functioning of the bowels. Constipation and improper functioning of the bowels can cause Crohn’s disease.

Eat a Well Balanced Diet: Low fat foods are easier to digest than foods that are high in fat. The latter can also cause Crohn’s disease. Hence, foods with high fat content should be avoided. You should also decrease the sugar content in your food, as high sugar foods can give rise to Crohn’s disease along with diabetes. Also avoid putting excess pressure on your intestines by consuming heavy meals. It’s better to have many small meals a day rather than a few heavy ones.


Exercise Regularly: It’s important that you lead an active life and incorporate exercise into your daily routine. Exercise improves your fitness, and a fit body is better able to digest food, fight infection and burn calories. Exercise also prevents a sedentary gut which is an ideal breeding ground for IBD.
