Cabbage Soup Diet Plan

The Cabbage Soup Diet is a low calorie diet that has individuals consuming large amounts of cabbage soup in addition to other low calorie foods for one week. There is no known creator of this diet, and there are several different versions of the Cabbage Soup Diet. The basis of the Cabbage Soup Diet is that if individuals reduce their calorie intake severally, then they will lose weight. This is done by consuming cabbage soup, in addition to a list of approved foods, to create an extremely low calorie diet.

Cabbage Soup Recipe

The recipe for the cabbage soup is:

  • Dry onion soup mix
  • 2 cubes beef bouillon
  • 1 celery stick, diced
  • ½ head cabbaged, diced
  • 12 cups of water
  • 3 carrots, sliced
  • 2 bell peppers, sliced
  • 6 green onions
  • 2 cans tomatoes
  • Salt, pepper, soy sauce and garlic powder to taste

The Diet Plan

On the 7-day Cabbage Soup Diet, dieters will consume 2 daily bowls of fat-free cabbage soup. Other approved foods include fruit, vegetables, skim milk and lean protein. Below is an example of the seven-day meal plan:

Day 1

  • 2 bowls of cabbage soup
  • Fruit (except bananas)

Dieters are allowed to consume unsweetened tea, cranberry juice, water and black coffee. 

Day 2

  • 2 bowls of cabbage soup
  • Low-calorie vegetables (except beans, corn and peas)
  • Baked potato with butter

Day 3

  • 2 bowls of cabbage soup
  • Combination of fruit and vegetables from Day 1 and Day 2

Day 4

  • 2 bowls of cabbage soup
  • 8 bananas
  • 2 8 oz glasses of skim milk 

Day 5

  • 2 bowls of cabbage soup
  • 20 oz of beef, fish or chicken
  • 6 tomatoes

Day 6

  • 2 bowls of cabbage soup
  • 3 beef steaks
  • Low-calorie vegetables from Day 2

Day 7

  • 2 bowls of cabbage soup
  • 2 cups brown rice
  • Low-calorie vegetables from Day 2
  • Unsweetened fruit juices

Dangers of the Diet

The limited food choices and low calories items on the Cabbage Soup Diet do not supply dieters with the proper amount of nutrients, vitamins and minerals to support body functions.

The Cabbage Soup Diet is not based upon any scientific research. While most individuals will probably experience weight loss while on the Cabbage Soup Diet, the majority of this loss is due to water weight.

To facilitate weight loss and increase overall health, a diet should include an exercise plan that combines both cardiovascular and strength training exercises. According to the Mayo Clinic, individuals should aim to workout for 30 minutes most days.

The high sulfurous content of the cabbage may cause stomach discomfort for some dieters.


Experts state that any diet below 1,200 calories is unsafe without direct medical supervision. The Cabbage Soup Diet has individuals consuming between 800 to 1,050 calories per day. Furthermore, once dieters resume normal eating habits, they may gain most of the weight back. This diet is a short-term fix and is not medically recommended.
