6 Healthy Party Appetizers

The best part about social gatherings is the party appetizers, and no party is complete without delicious grub that can be enjoyed amongst friends. While these fun foods might taste delicious and add to your party enjoyment, these fried delights are also detrimental to your waistline and can sabotage your diet. And, as you’re chatting away and mindlessly throwing back a few appetizers here and there, you are taking in more calories than you realize. What’s the solution? Leave the box of mini corn dogs, mini pizzas and mini tacos in the freezer, and whip up some healthy party appetizers.

Here are 6 healthy choices that will leave your friends begging for more, without destroying their diets for the day:

1. Caprese Bites

These are not only healthy, but they taste great and are easy to create. Simply take a tooth pick, and place a cherry tomato, a tiny mozzarella ball and a piece of basil onto it. Put your caprese bites on a platter, and drizzle them with balsamic vinegar, olive oil and pepper.

2. Hummus Platter

Hummus, the popular dip made from chickpeas, is the ideal party dip; tasty, convenient and healthy! Make hummus the centerpiece of your veggie platter, and this appetizer is sure to be a hit. Include an array of colorful raw veggies, and throw in some bakes pita chips.

3. Lettuce Sliders

Sliders, aka mini burgers, are an increasingly popular appetizer, and for good reason! Why not make them a healthy appetizer as well, and throw out the bun. You could even make your mini patties out of turkey or veggie meat. Place each mini patty on a piece of lettuce, and add some fun toppings, such as grilled onions, mushrooms, pico de gallo, guacamole…the options are endless!

4. Bruschetta

Bruschetta is always delicious, and you can add nutrients to this appetizer by using a whole wheat baguette. Slice up the bread, brush one side with olive oil, and toast the pieces in the oven for about 5 minutes at 450 degrees. Mix up your topping using tomatoes, onions, garlic, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, basil, salt and pepper, and through in some cut up avocado for flavor and healthy fat. Top each slice of toasted bread with the mixture.

5. Meat Skewers

Serve chicken skewers with a low-fat sauce. Or, another fun option is to make turkey meatballs, line them up on a stick, and serve them with a low-fat marinara sauce.

6. Shrimp Cocktail

Shrimp will satisfy the seafood lovers without destroying their diets. Shrimp is low in fat and makes for an easy party appetizer. Try to find a low fat dipping sauce to serve with the shrimp.

You can enjoy scrumptious party appetizers at social gathers as long as you make the right choices. Also, whether you’re throwing a party or attending one, try to put your appetizers on a small plate to be aware of how much your consuming.
