When you’re trying to burn fat, you may try looking for low-fat entrees for dinner and lunch. But what about breakfast? What are some breakfast ideas that can help you burn fat?
First, an obligatory reminder to eat breakfast each day. It’s tempting to try to skip breakfast since it’s often the easiest meal of the day to forego – but don’t. Eating something when you first get up gets your metabolism going for the day, and that is vital to burning the most fat possible.
The key to fat burning foods is that they are low in calories and high in complex carbohydrates (think whole grains).
Cereal is an excellent fat burning choice for breakfast. Whole grain cereals are great because they contain “slow release” carbohydrates that will give you energy at a steady rate, rather than the quick energy spurt of a more sugary choice. Try muesli or your favorite bran flakes. Aim for choices that have at least 5 grams of fiber per serving and less than 8 grams of sugar; also, choose cereals that don’t list sugar in the first 3 ingredients.
Don’t forget oatmeal – it’s probably the best fat burning cereal choice of all.
I can hear you saying, “But I thought muffins were high in fat!” Most are, but not all. The key is to bake your own muffins, so you can control the fat and sugar contents. Play around with various recipes; banana or raisin bran muffins are good choices. Try to use whole wheat flour for some or all of the flour, and you can also try reducing the sugar.
Try subbing applesauce for some or all of the oil to make them even better for fat burning. These suggestions will all help create muffins with complex carbs which will give you long-lasting energy. After baking, muffins freeze well, and you can microwave a few for a quick breakfast.
Make a smoothie in your blender. You can experiment with ingredients; some ideas are fresh fruit (try strawberries or bananas), orange juice and non-fat vanilla yogurt. This will provide fruit and fiber to start your day.
Similar to the smoothie, the breakfast parfait layers non-fat vanilla yogurt with your favorite fruit (berries are great choices). Top with a bit of low-fat granola for some crunchy texture.
Omelets are another great fat burning food. Make yours with egg whites, veggies of choice, reduced-fat cheese and ground flax seed powder for extra fiber and heart healthiness.
6. Whole Grain Toast
A slice of toast and a piece of fruit make an excellent fat burning breakfast. The key is to choose a whole grain bread. Not just whole wheat; whole grain. Check the fiber content for one slice of bread: you should aim for bread with at least 3 grams of fiber per slice.
These breakfast choices will help get your metabolism fired up in the morning, and will get that fat burning away. As an added benefit, you won’t be starving when lunchtime rolls around.
