5 Healthy Snacks for Pregnant Women

Pregnancy is a time for good nutrition, and a good way to achieve that nutrition is through a healthy diet and healthy snacks.  When pregnant, additional calories are needed to ensure that both mother and baby are getting the proper amount of calories, but only about 300 additional calories are needed a day.  Snacks rich in protein and fiber are the best choices for pregnant mothers because fiber helps to reduce constipation, which is common in pregnancy, and protein helps to reduce nausea and fatigue.

1.  Crackers and Cheese

Crackers and cheese are an excellent choice for both protein and fiber. Whole grain and whole wheat crackers are the best choice because they have higher amounts of fiber. Other choices for crackers, such as animal crackers and graham crackers, are good choices as well, because they are nutritious and they are great to curb the sweet tooth. Cheese is a good source of calcium and Vitamin D since it is made with milk. The cheese can be cut up in squares to go with the crackers, or it can be string cheese. Both make good and easy snacks.

2.  Nuts

Nuts are a great snack, as they are full of antioxidants, they are high in fiber and they are a great source for protein. Nuts work great because they can be bought either in a can or they can be bought in prepackaged small serving sizes, which make them great for on the go. They can be tossed nicely into a bag. Nuts can also be part of a trail mix with additional ingredients.

3.  Fresh Fruit

Fruit has many benefits such as being a great source of Vitamin C, full of antioxidants and are full of water so they help to keep the body hydrated. Fruit is a snack that does not require a ton of preparation. Oranges, apples and bananas can be eaten as they are. Fruits can also be sliced and dipped into other healthy foods, such as peanut butter or yogurt.

4.  Fresh Vegetables

Raw vegetables are the best way to eat vegetables because in that state is when they are the most nutritious.  They have many vitamins that regulate the metabolism and reduce the risk for heart disease.  Vegetables can be cut up and can be eaten with a variety of dips.

5.  Popcorn

Popcorn is a great snack that is quick and easy to make. They are low in fat, they are filling and they are low in calories.  Popcorn can be made in the microwave, and there are even individual sizes available. There are a variety of toppings that can be sprinkled on the popcorn to give it additional flavor.

Pregnancy is a vital time for getting the proper nutrition. It is key for the health of the mother and for the health of the baby.  Be smart in the foods you are eating and what snacks you are eating as well.  Remember, these are snacks and should be eaten in moderation.
