It can often be very difficult to make an educated decision at the deli counter regarding what types of deli meats are best for you and your family. Not only are there a huge selection typically available, but the information provided about the products can also be sometimes difficult to understand. Be sure to understand the fat, sodium and hormone content of your deli meats before making a final selection.

1. Saturated Fats

One of the most dangerous byproducts found in deli meats is saturated fats. Saturated fats can be very unhealthy for a number of different reasons. First, saturated fats have been found to be a major contributor to a number of serious health condition. Some of these include cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and even some types of cancer. In addition to being a major factor in the development of these life-threatening conditions, high amounts of saturated fat have also been blamed for the increaseing rates of obesity around the world. 2. Sodium

Next, deli meats such as ham, roast beef and other products are typically loaded with high amounts of sodium, otherwise known as salt. As with saturated fats, sodium has been found to be detrimental due to a number of various reasons. While salt does not contain any calories in and of itself, it can be a major contributor to weight gain due to its ability to promote water retention. This not only makes it dangerous for you if you are ineterested in weight loss, but can also lead to health concerns. If you must choose a deli meat, try to find something that has little or no added sodium. Good choices usually include turkey, chicken and other similar products.

3. Antibiotics

Deli meats, such as those described above, have been found (on some occasions) to be high in antibiotics and growth hormone. While there is still much research that needs to be done on the effect of eating these products, many people now believe that adding antibiotics and growth hormones to food sources has been linked to the development of drug-resistant infections. For best results, try to choose deli meats that clearly state they have no added antibiotics or hormones. This will ensure that the meat you get is in its most natural form.
