Zumba Dance for Weight Loss

A new dance workout has taken the fitness industry by storm and that is Zumba. Zumba is a fitness and aerobic dance workout that will burn many calories in a single session. This is a type of dance workout that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and is becoming a very popular way to burn excess calories.

The Beginning

The whole craze was started by a Columbian born dancer and choreographer named Beto Perez. He went to a few different fitness centers in Miami, Florida and taught his new dance class. The students quickly took to the music, the steps and the energy that Zumba offers. Soon after the classes began, additional classes and workout DVDs were everywhere.

What Is Zumba?

Zumba is an aerobic dance workout that tones muscles and burns calories. Songs are chosen and a choreographed dance is created to this song. The songs are a mix of salsa, samba, meringue and other upbeat Latin music. This type of exercise is called interval training because each song has a different beat and a different tempo. Between each song, you will get a small rest before the next song starts. The sessions will last anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour depending on the instructor.  The songs will start off on the slower side and will progressively get faster as the class goes on. This is how the intensity is created.

Most of the instructors are Zumba success stories. They have been through a two-day training course and are certified to teach a class.  They all have a love for Zumba and want to pass that on.

Why Zumba?

People who enjoy Zumba say they keep going back because they do not feel like they are exercising. They feel like they are at a dance party and are getting the benefits of a smaller waistline.

In this class, you are always moving. You lift your arms up and swing them around in circles. This works the front and the backs of the arms. For your legs, you will be taking steps sideways and backwards and even spinning around. You will also be squatting down and work the gluteal muscles. For your arms, the different dance moves have you doing a standing crunch. These will not feel like crunches since you move through them so quickly. Because of the upbeat music and the different moves to each song, boredom never sets in and the exercise stays exciting and new. Any age and fitness level can benefit from these classes. The moves are easy to pick up on and are low impact.

Even though you are getting in a good calorie burning and toning exercise, it does not feel that way. You are dancing, having fun and enjoying yourself. The weight loss results seem like an added bonus. There are Zumba classes and DVDs all over the country and the world, so trying out Zumba is really easy. Getting started is the hardest part.
