Why a Vegetarian Diet Alleviates Seasonal Allergies

Many people suffer from seasonal allergies which usually begin in early spring and last until late in the fall. Allergies are non-life threatening, but nevertheless, they can be a nuisance, which is why many resort to the use of anti-histamines during these months. But these anti-histamines can have negative side-effects which you may not want to deal with, such as drowsiness, dizziness, and in some cases, even depression.

By switching to a vegetarian diet, you can alleviate the symptoms of seasonal allergies naturally, and without any side effects. A vegetarian diet allows you to drink milk and eat eggs, but you avoid all meat.

What Causes Seasonal Allergies?

The allergies are brought on when the immune system over-reacts to allergens such as plant pollen, grass or dust in the air. These allergens are airborne and therefore affect the eyes, nose and lungs, causing itchiness, runny nose or difficulty breathing. In severe cases, an allergic reaction may lead to asthmatic symptoms.

The immune system is responsible for warding off disease. But, when it is laden down with heavy toxins, it can become weak and over-reactive to allergens. As soon as it senses an allergen it feels threatened, and therefore sends a signal to produce an antibody known as IgE to help keep them from entering the body. 

During an allergic reaction, the body also produces 2 other chemicals known as leukotrienes and histamine, which not only attack the allergens, but can also restrict bronchial tubes making it difficult to breathe properly. Of the two, leukotrienes are the worst as they can restrict the tubes up to 1,000 times more than histamine.

How Can a Vegetarian Diet Help?

Seasonal allergies are an immune disorder, and so you want to do everything you can to build up your immune system. In order to do that, you need to get rid of all the toxins which are in the body. 

A vegetarian diet will help you to do that, because you are no longer eating meat, which contributes to many toxins in your body. Instead, you are eating a lot more fresh fruits and vegetables as well as nuts. These foods are high in antioxidants and fiber, which help to remove harmful toxins from the body which weigh the immune system down.

Meat not only contributes to the toxins, but it is high in cholesterol and saturated fats which contribute to the weakening of the immune system. Meat also contains a lot of arachidonic acids which help to produce leukotrienes during an allergic reaction. Arachidonic acids are also produced by the body and are good for you in moderation, but when too many are present they can cause health problems.

So by switching to a vegetarian diet you are reducing the amount of these acids and toxins, which in turn will help you to reduce the symptoms of an allergic reaction.

Transitioning to a vegetarian diet can be difficult, but it does not have to be if you gradually start decreasing your meat consumption. To substitute for the protein in meat, simply eat a lot of nuts, seeds and legumes. Once you increase your intake of nuts, you will naturally increase your intake of fruits and vegetables as well.
