Antioxidants in Tea

The Different Kinds of Tea
As studies have already shown, teas contain many antioxidants. Some teas contain more flavonoids than the others. Another kind of tea contain more epigallocatchin than the rest. Others are richer in polyphenols. Preference in the choice of tea depends generally on the individual’s taste and needs.
Black tea is popular among those who love to have some small caffeine content in their teas. They undergo oxidation in the process hence, it has a stronger and bitter taste compared to other teas. They are also very rich in flavonoids, another type of antioxidants aside from its polyphenols content. The polyphenols in black teas are said to be at least eight times more than those found in fruits and vegetables.
White teas are usually made from the leaves of the plant Camellia Sinensis. The leaves do not undergo oxidation, thereby giving the tea a light and delicate taste. It has the greatest amount of the antioxidant called, epigallocatechin, which is said to have many cancer preventing properties. It also has the least caffeine content of all teas.
Oolong tea only undergoes a short fermentation period. They are said to contain the most polyphenols. Its caffeine content is somewhat similar or just a bit lesser than those contained in black and green teas.
Green teas, like white teas, also do not undergo fermentation. The antioxidants in green teas have been studied well. They are very rich in polyphenols, as well as flavonoids. They have a lower caffeine content compared to black teas, and also do not contain any calories. Just like white teas, green teas are also very rich in epigallocatechin, a type of antioxidant. Because it has been widely studied among all teas, green tea is said to have the most antioxidants compared to the others.
Although antioxidants found in teas differ in type and amount, their effects in the body are mostly the same. They prevent cancer, improve the skin, enhance the immune system and promote good health for the cardiovascular system.
