Amino acid powder comes in a variety of doses and ingredients. Some contain just one or two of the amino acids needed for bulk or bodybuilding since athletes and bodybuilders are the most common users of this product. A person can supplement his or her diet using these powders depending upon their needs and desired outcome. Caution should be used since some of the amino acids can cause liver and/or kidney damage if used excessively.
Why Are Amino Acids Essential?
Amino acids are the building blocks for proteins and play an important role in health and well being. Proteins include hormones, enzymes, neurotransmitters, blood cells, connective tissue and cell membranes and require amino acids for their synthesis. Many other amino acids have other roles, such as being substrates for energy production. Since the body can only produce non-essential amino acids and not the “essential” amino acids, those amino acids must be acquired through diet, vitamins and/or supplements.
What Are Amino Acid Powders?
The most common supplements are whey and creatine.
Whey is derived from milk and stimulates the amino acids responsible for building muscle. It also serves as an antioxidant and strengthens the immune system.
Creatine provides short bursts of energy for increased results when exercising. It can:
- increase strength
- increase energy
- increase muscle mass
- reduce recovery time.
Amino acid powders can increase the results of exercise, but cannot increase muscle growth without exercise.
