Though all yoga mats are similar in their design, when doing a specialized yoga practice like Bikram yoga or “hot yoga,” you should be sure to choose an appropriate mat to prevent slipping when you start to sweat. Though a lot of the choice will be determined by personal preference, there are a few things to consider when buying a mat for your Bikram yoga class.
Foam Yoga Mats
Thin foam mats are readily available in a number of patterns and colors. These are by far the most popular kind of mat, because they are inexpensive and quite durable. They stick well to the floor and can easily be cleaned by simply wiping them off with soapy water. For Bikram yoga, a foam mat should not be used on its own, as it can become slippery. This kind of mat is effective though when used with a towel over it to prevent slipping.
Natural Fiber Yoga Mats
Fiber mats made from cotton or linen are environmentally friendly and come in a variety of thicknesses to suit your personal taste and comfort. They are also very effective in absorbing sweat, making them a good fit for Bikram yoga. However, they can be very slick on a wood floor and should always be used together with a non-stick mat to prevent slippage when working out.
Rubber Yoga Mats
Rubber yoga mats are durable and like natural fiber mats come in a variety of thicknesses. They work great on many different surfaces and do not present problems with slipping. However, rubber mats are quite a bit more expensive than other mats.
Consider these options before buying a mat for your Bikram yoga workout. If you are still wondering what is best for you, talk to your yoga instructor about what kind they recommend.
