Toning at home is a great way to create firm, defined muscles. Best of all, toning is one of the best home workouts because it can be achieved without much equipment, making it ideal for those with limited space. Here are some ideas if you’d like to tone while at home.
Find a Spot
The first step to toning at home is to find a place to exercise. It doesn’t need to be an at home gym; just a clear area in the living room will do. It is preferable that the area be carpeted since some exercises will be done lying on the floor, but if that is not possible, you can always use an exercise mat.
Get Your Heart Pumping
Cardio exercises are key to toning, because all the muscle tone in the world won’t help you if your muscles are covered in fat. Cardio is excellent for burning fat, and there are many cardio workouts available on DVD. It’s helpful if your workout spot is near a TV, so you can pop in videos quickly to lead you through your workout. Beachbody and The Firm are two brands to check out for fun, effective workouts.
Get into Yoga
Yoga is an excellent home exercise for toning. Yoga offers additional benefits as well; it helps balance your mental, physical and spiritual dimensions. Yoga also helps stabilize your metabolism by eliminating fat stored around cells while you are stretching and elongating your muscles during yoga positions. There are numerous yoga workouts on DVD and video, which can lead you through various exercises.
Pilates is another excellent option for toning at home. Pilates requires little equipment and is excellent for strengthening your body’s core. Pop in a pilates video workout and enjoy the dynamic tension that is key to pilates – working muscle against muscle. Pilates also increases strength and flexibility, and can be done in a small space such as an office or living room.
Calisthenics, or bodyweight exercises, are idea for home because they require no special equipment. You will perform various simple movements using your own body for resistance. Familiar bodyweight exercises include squats, lunges, pushups, situps and crunches, among others. Create a circuit of exercises you can work through to create a total-body workout. The circuit method, which involves alternating the focused body part, is excellent for toning muscles.
Warm Up, Cool Down
Be sure to begin and end your home workouts with warm up and cool down periods. These can consist of stretching exercises, jogging in place, etc. Although it’s tempting to skip the warm up and cool down, they are vital to a safe toning workout. Best of all, they take very little space to perform.
Aim for Consistency
Whichever exercises you decide on for toning at home, the key is consistency. Aim to work out at least 5 days per week in 30-minute sessions. As your muscles become more toned and defined, you will be happy you decided to commit to a home toning routine.
