Walking vs Running: The Best Workout for Your Lifestyle

What is the best workout for you, walking or running? Really, it comes down to the specific person. Since walking and running are an easy and free way to keep yourself in shape, it’s no surprise that they are the most popular forms of exercise. But, there is a debate over which is better. Both activities are healthy, and both have some good benefits and help you keep your body in shape. But, which is better?

Calories Burned

If you’re looking for the better calorie burn, running is your choice. Running can burn double the amount of calories burned walking. The exact amount you would burn varies depending on your weight and speed, but running burns more energy. This is because you’re putting more of a strain on your muscles when you’re running. That’s why when you get tired running, it helps to slow down to a walk. It doesn’t work the other way around.

Injury

Runners are more likely to get injured than a walker. We all know that you can get hurt walking, but it’s not as common as running injuries. That’s because you’re putting so much more stress on your joints when you’re running. Runners also have a bigger risk of pulling a muscle, so it’s important to warm up and stretch your muscles if you’re running. These are things that don’t need to be considered when you’re going for a walk.

How Fit Are You?

If you’re not in good shape, you may not have much of a choice. Walking may be the only option. In some cases, you may be able to work your body up to a run, through conditioning over time. As you get in better shape, you may need to start running just to keep up with your calorie burn, due to the extra weight you previously held. But, it is always important to know your body and not to push yourself too far or to fast. If walking is best for you, don’t push yourself into a run.

Which is best for you? Well, that depends on you. It also depends on the circumstances of the day. Running can be an escape into your head to just run off a bad day. It can actually give you a high. But, walks can be relaxing and still give you time to keep your body moving. Walks can be great to do with a partner and are a great time for a chat.

If you’ve had a long day and don’t feel like working out, you might be able to convince yourself to go for a walk. So, on that day, a walk would be the best workout, but the next day, you may just want to go for a good run. It’s up to you; just make sure you know the limits of your body, and make sure you take the time to stretch or warm up. Running and walking are both good forms of exercise that generally will only cost you a good pair of shoes. So, lace up those shoes and go out and do what makes you feel better at the end of the day.
