Yoga therapy training is quite interesting and can be a great way to bridge the gap between healing, spirituality, and fitness. Yoga has actually been around for thousands of years and is not as simple as it may at first appear to be.
What is Yoga Therapy?
You probably have some idea of what yoga is, and maybe you even practice it. What you may not be aware of is that it is quickly becoming a method of therapy for many health issues.
In the words of Gary Kraftsow of the American Viniyoga Institute, “Yoga therapy derived from the Yoga tradition of Patanjali and the Ayurvedic system of health care refers to the adaptation and application of Yoga techniques and practices to help individuals facing health challenges at any level manage their condition, reduce symptoms, restore balance, increase vitality and improve attitude.”
Sutras of Patanjali
Patanjali was actually the great sage from thousands of years ago who wrote the yoga sutras. These sutras remain a poignant part of the spiritual writings in yoga and are central to parts of the yoga therapy training.
The Sutras of Patanjali consist of 195 verses, which are divided into four chapters. Those who study the book have trained and practiced and are able to reach a high level of consciousness.
Nidra Yoga Meditation
Part of true yoga therapy consists of practicing deep meditation. Nidra Yoga Meditation is likened to a state of deep sleep. Using this in combination with the physical aspects of yoga practice helps to promote healing in the body on several levels: spiritual, physical, and mental.
Yoga therapy is about intention; the intention to create balance and healing in all parts of the body, including the mind. It is believed that the mind-body connection is so united that using yoga therapy to heal one, is to heal the other.
Yoga therapy training can be utilized for self-healing or for providing yoga therapy to others. The types of issues that one might use for yoga therapy are:
- Any type of chronic pain (back, joint, etc)
- Drug Abuse

A great starting point is to begin simple yoga poses at home, in your own comfort, before embarking further. Once you have developed some comfort, it is best to seek a mentor yoga instructor who can guide you to therapeautic uses.
