Top 6 Cereals for Fiber

They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and they would be right! After a fast of around 8 hours, your body is crying out for nutrients, so it makes sense to give it something containing vitamins, minerals and fiber first thing in the morning.

Finding a breakfast cereal that is high in fiber is going to give your morning a great kick-start, as a healthy amount of fiber will regulate your digestive system and reduce the likelihood of constipation.

Amongst the dozens of cereals on the market, there are a few to look out for that contain a good portion of heart-healthy fiber.

1. Fiber One

This is one of the best cereals you can eat in the morning when it comes to boosting your fiber intake. Containing a whopping 14 grams of fiber in just one half-cup, this adds up to over half of the recommended minimum daily amount of 25 grams. With a splash of cold milk and some fresh fruit, this is a deliciously filling start to the day.

2. GOLEAN Cereal

This cereal comes in both cold and hot varieties, and contains 10 grams of fiber per serving. They have 6 different varieties to choose from, including toasted berry, honey almond and vanilla flavors to keep breakfast time interesting and tasty.

3. Kellogg’s All Bran

A family favorite for many years, this offering from cereal giant Kelloggs packs between 10 and 13 grams of fiber in a single serving.  Similar in shape and texture to Fiber One, original All Bran now has variations to keep eating high fiber cereals interesting and tasty. Strawberry Medley,  Bran Buds and Complete Wheat Flakes all offer different shapes and textures that can be mixed up with fruit, yogurt and honey for delicious combinations. 

4. Grape Nuts

Another old-timer, Post’s Grape Nuts have been around since 1898, and have a deliciously sweet, nutty flavor that gives you 7 grams of fiber per serving. They are also available as a flaked cereal for those who may prefer the texture. Grape Nuts is quite a dense cereal, so a little can go a long way.

5. Shredded Wheat

Another great cereal from makers, Post.  Shredded Wheat keeps things simple by adding very little to these breakfast biscuits.  They can be jazzed up by adding a handful of fresh berries, or a drizzle of honey with a sliced banana. A single bowlful of Shredded Wheat will provide 6 grams of fiber, as well as plenty of whole grain nutrition and 9 minerals and vitamins.

6. Quaker High-Fiber Instant Oatmeal

Ok, maybe not the most imaginative name to give a high fiber instant oatmeal, but this is a great tasting alternative to regular oatmeal that can sometimes put a lot of people off.  They have a new Cinnamon Swirl version to compliment their already popular Maple and Brown Sugar oatmeal.  While there may be a little more added sugar in these cereals, they are very filling and can provide you with 10 grams of fiber in a single bowl

As well as being great breakfast cereals, these products can also be used as a great way to boost the fiber content of dozens of recipes including soups, salads and muffins.
