Three Stretches to Help with Neck Pain

Neck pain can get the best of us, especially with such hectic lifestyles to keep up with. Thanks to work, home and other stresses, aches and pains can even start to feel like they’re taking over your life. The good news is that there are some simple exercises that can help eliminate the neck pain you might feel at the end of a long day, so you can get to bed and wake up feeling ready to take on a new day.

The Head Turn

This is a simple exercise that should be done while standing up to ensure you are standing tall. You simply want to turn your head to the left until you feel the muscle start to stretch and then hold it for 15 seconds. Next, turn head to the right and hold it for another 15 seconds once the stretching is felt. It is important to make sure that you don’t stretch the muscles too much. Otherwise, they might become sore. Repeat these steps at least three times or until the pain and tension start to subside.

The Head Tilt

This exercise is similar to the previous one, but instead of turning the head, you will tilt it down toward your shoulders. You may not feel as much of a stretch with this exercise as you might when turning your head, but it should help to eliminate the neck pain felt near the back of the head. It isn’t necessary to hold the position for 15 seconds with the exercise either. Instead, just keep the head tilted for five seconds or so. This particular move should be done in the morning and in the evening for maximum results.

Neck Extensors

This can help with neck pain that tends to linger for any amount of time. Start by placing your hands against the back of your head and then press your head gently forward letting your chin go toward your chest. Repeat this process a few times, trying to get your chin closer to your chest each time. It is important not to try this exercise by leaning your head back, as this can aggravate neck pain.

Doing exercises to relieve neck pain will not eliminate the problem if the cause of the pain is not diagnosed. This can be done by paying close attention to your posture as you sit at a desk, or the way you sleep at night. Chances are, that once you recognize what the culprit is, you can lay off the neck exercises because you will know how to avoid the pain altogether.
