Created by award winning cookbook editor Fran McCullough, the Living Low Carb diet is based upon McCullough’s own struggles with weight loss and the successful steps she followed to lose her weight.
While McCullough is aware that a low carbohydrate diet is not new or unique, she decided to put a new twist on this popular form of dieting. Being a cookbook editor, McCullough was not able or willing to give up flavorful and rich foods to lose weight; instead she learned how to create these types of dishes in a low carbohydrate manner. The Living Low-Carb diet is a combination of a diet with a cookbook. There are 175 low carbohydrate recipes featured in this diet book.
The Living Low-Card diet recommends that dieters eat no more than 30g of carbohydrates a day. Butter and cream are to be limited. Dieters are advised to eat breakfast, lunch, dinner and three snacks.
When on this diet, individuals are advised to eat a piece of fruit every morning with breakfast. Recommended types of fruit include peaches, melons, kiwi and berries. In regards to protein intake, dieters are advised to eat ½g of protein per pound of ideal body weight a day. Protein is to be eaten at every meal.
Recommended foods on the Living Low-Carb diet include:

- olive oil
- sesame oil
- lean beef
The Living Low-Carb diet fails to promote a specific exercise routine. While McCullough acknowledges that exercise is beneficial for health reasons, such as preventing heart disease and increasing lean muscle mass, she fails to make any actual exercise recommendations on the Living Low-Carb diet nor does she discuss the connection between exercise and weight loss.

If you have followed a low carbohydrate diet in the past and experienced success, then the Living Low-Carb may be an excellent option for you. This diet provides recipes that are filling and taste good, with the aim that an individual will forget she’s on a diet. Many of the recipes in the Living Low-Carb book provide low carbohydrate alternatives to popular high carbohydrate dishes.
Things to Consider
According to the Mayo Clinic, low carb diets can send the body into ketosis. According to proponents of low carb diets, ketosis is beneficial and promotes weight loss, yet a side effect of ketosis is ketones. These ketones can lead to kidney disease, gout and kidney stones.
The Living Low-Carb diet does not offer anything different in regards to weight loss than most other low carbohydrate diets on the market. This diet also fails to provide an exercise loss plan which can maximize weight loss. The Living Low-Carb diet does provide low carb diet fans with good tasting dishes to eat while they follow a low carbohydrate diet.
