The Hot Latin Diet
Created by Dr. Manny Alvarez, the Hot Latin Diet is designed to help Latin people lose weight while living in the United States.
Dr. Alvarez based the foundation of this diet around the issue that many Latin American immigrants face after spending a few years in America. After being healthy and slim in their home countries, often these Latin Americans gain considerable weight in the United States.
According to Dr. Alvarez, dieters can expect to lose up to 20 pounds in 6 weeks on this diet. He stated that his diet plan would reduce food cravings by 11 percent and increase the metabolism rate by 25 percent.
Food and flavor are important to the Latino culture; therefore, Dr. Alvarez makes sure that the foods on the Hot Latin Diet still taste good. This is a lower carbohydrate diet that has individuals eliminating all refined carbohydrates and simple carbohydrates from their diet. Dieters will eat three meals and three snacks a day while on the Hot Latin Diet.
There are seven foods that are common in the Latin diet that Dr. Alvarez describes as superfoods because of their antioxidants. These foods include:
- garbanzo beans
When on this diet, individuals are advised to eat low glycemic index foods such as legumes, fruits, whole grains and non-starch vegetables. For lean protein, Dr. Alvarez recommends eating seafood. According to Dr. Alvarez, individuals who ate fish at lunch ate 11 percent fewer calories at dinner. Other foods that are recommended on the Hot Latin Diet include avocados, olive oil and nuts, all for their heart healthy fats.
What to Get Excited About
The meals in the Hot Latin Diet were all created by a certified nutritionist. This helps ensure that the meals provide essential nutrients and vitamins in addition to tasting good. This diet promotes high quality lean protein along with fresh fruit and vegetables, all of which help create a well-balanced, healthy diet. Finally, the Hot Latin Diet is high in essential fatty acids, which have shown to help reduce heart disease, diabetes and inflammation.
Things to Consider
Unfortunately, the Hot Latin Diet fails to promote a daily exercise routine. According to the Mayo Clinic, the combination of a lower calorie diet and daily moderate physical activity is the most successful combination for weight loss.
The recipes in the Hot Latin Diet book may take quite a bit of planning and preparing. This extra time may be discouraging for some dieters.
In general, the Hot Latin Diet advises individuals to follow a healthy approach to weight loss. For the most part, this diet is structured around low calorie, low carbohydrates meals that should lead to weight loss and promote healthy eating habits. To maximize weight loss, individuals should try to incorporate 30 to 60 minutes of physical exercise most days of the week.
